Fuel pump fuse blown first time, replace fuel pump?
 
Hello, I am the original owner of a 2000 S-type V8 4.0 with 55K miles on it. The 15amp fuel pump fuse blown while the car was running on city street. It was a 100 F that day, and this was the first time the fuel pump's fuse blown. Car has been running fine the last several weeks after I replaced the fuse. I read that the fuel pump might be the cause, should I go ahead replace it to prevent another failure?

Standing behind the car and looking toward the front, the fuel pump is on the right hand side (passenger side of US car), please confirm? Below are pics of left and right access hatches, with fuel pump side labeled. To disconnect the hose, do I press the two tabs (labeled in pic) and pull the hose straight up?

Would pulling the pump’s fuse and crank the car several times is enough to relieve fuel pressure? Many thanks for your help!

The fuel pump is located on the RH side when viewed from the driving position.

The connections on the pump housing must be removed carefully as they are no longer available as service parts should they break. Use the search function on this forum to read about removing these lines correctly as the tabs must be squeezed and the fittings PUSHED in to get them to release. Release fuel pressure at the schraeder valve on the engine.

Refer to the Workshop Manual for the correct procedures. If you don't have the manual, here is a link:

Hello, I finally able to remove the hose and the pump. For someone else who might perform this procedure, particularly remove the hoses, rotate the hose and the "ring" (with the marked tabs) a little bit to loosen them, then squeeze the tabs and grab the hose by the two "ears" and pull the hose up. The "ring" with the two tabs stay with the assembly.

Anyway, below is a pic of the pump assembly taken out from the right side (driver perspective facing front), there is something like a filter (circled in yellow) attached. Should there be a filter there? I don't see this filter mentioned anywhere in workshop manual. Thanks for the help again.

That is not a factory part.

Looks like the faulty fuel pump (inside the canister) was bypassed with an external pump. (The part circled in yellow)

I would consider ditching that setup and purchase a new fuel pump assembly. The actual fuel pump that is inside the canister is available. (and a serviceable part)

Hello, thank you for replying. I think the circled in yellow part is a filter. There is no power connection to it, and the pump inside the canister still work fine. But all the pictures about this assembly that I could find on the web do not have this "filter" circled in yellow. I did order an entire new assembly that doesn't have this "filter". My concern is, is there a filter up front behind the fender, since the new standard assembly does not have a filter inside the tank. The car is in a position such that I can't jack it up and check. Incidentally, i have this car since new with 35 miles on it, I wonder how this non-standard assembly got in there.

What about the yellow wire?

Basically the black rubber hose and that metal contraption are not part of the original pump assembly.

The clear flex hose would connect to where the black hose connects up top, where the electrical connections are.
