Gear box fault and restricted performance
This happened a couple weeks ago i was making a left hand turn and my car rpm wet up to about 6000 and stayed there for a few seconds and then a huge clunk and jerk. It would slip gears in 1st mainly and shifted fine through the other gears and when sitting at a stop light car gets a jerking motion as if someone had given me a love tap from behind. I took it to the local shop that has been doing great work so far but they could not find the problem due to not having a transmission code reader for a jaguar said it cost 25000? I got it back 3 days ago drove fine for 3 days then this morning gearbox fault with restricted performance again. Ive called pretty much every shop in the area and noone has the tool and nearest dealer is two and half hours away. As for my car it is an 03 str with 136000.
At least check the 2 bolts on the side of the trans for the shifter are present and snug, as otherwise the trans may be in a different gear (or none) than the rest of the car - and you - think.
Sorry for the late response been busy. I checked the two bolts and they are snug. I started it today and restricted performance and gear box fault and I restarted twice and it reset everything cleared. It looks to be electrical. Any other info or things to try would be appreciated.
I'd start with an OBD tool that does "live data" - see thread in General Tech for tool (elm327 is OK).
Check for codes.
Check you have either P1000 or P1111.
Check OBD status as engine warms up and that the car goes CL (see acronyms in my sig)
Check fuel trims in CL, warm engine, at idle & at about 2500rpm (in P or N).
Report back any time you like
The idea is that you need to know the engine is properly working as otherwise many times it is what upsets the autobox.
Revs shooting up does not sound like autobox to blame.
Separately, you might start on other checks such as fluid levels (coolant & eng oil, PAS, gearbox but it's not easy to do right) and drive belts etc.
Has the car had proper servicing, e.g. at 100K miles?

03black str, did you drive through damp weather prior to fault? This can seep into electrical connectors. My 133K mile 03 STR is going to the trans shop this week for a rebuild. The ZF is stout and is good for an average of 100K + miles before something you describe turns up.
