How-to change Air temp sensor (in dash)
 

So I had a strange acting HVAC system. It worked pretty good last fall but I could tell something wasn't right. Then this spring it seemed to work well in either full hot or full cold mode. And when trying to use automatic mode it would be ok for a while then either go to full hot or full cold on its own. In manual mode it would work as long as the inside temp was within 5deg of the outside temp.. or on full cold or hot. If setting temps with dual mode it was inop. My gut instinct told me it must be a sensor or something that was being effected by duct / in car temperature.
I repeatedly spray cleaned and even used tweezers and Q-tips. This did improve the situation but it would still not work properly.

And after checking everything I determined it was the in cabin air temp sensor # XR840055

I couldn't find much about how to replace this thing. Even the DIY: Diagnose It Yourself - JaguarClimateControl.com article didn't help much on how to R&R this sensor.

So here is a quick overview of how to remove and replace it:
- Move the steering wheel to full down (or nearly full down) position
- Move both seats to full rear position
- Disconnect battery
- Remove cigarette tray
- Remove tray in center console (two screws and pulls straight up)
- Remove trim around shifter (pulls straight up by hand)
- Remove trim that goes from rear of shifter up and around center stack controls. (pulls up and rearward by hand)
- Remove center stack assembly (4 screws and pulls straight rearward) **no need to remove wires. Just put rags on shifter and seat and you can lay it to the passenger side**
- Remove plastic trim (wood grain on my car) around the meter and towards the center (has center vents and it pulls straight rearward w/plastic trim tools)
- Remove trim around meter (4 screws)
- Tape cloth to meter to prevent scratching. Especially favor its inboard side because your hands and tools will be touching it!
- Remove air sensor grille
- Remove lower trim under steering wheel (2 screws and pulls straight down)
- Remove tambour door on top of steering wheel cover
- Unclip starter switch and tuck down and away (pulls towards drivers door)
---- Now you have adequate clearance to most easily access the sensor----
- Unclip air sensor wire (pulls towards front of car)
- Pull / push rubber hose off of sensor. (carefully work with large flat blade screw driver in right hand, and pull on hose w/left hand)
- Tuck hose down and out of way
- Use small mirror to locate 2 screws that hold sensor on.
- Outboard screw must be fully removed (towards front of car)
- Inboard screw can be unscrewed half way (no need to fully remove)
- R&R air temp sensor

I choose to also replace the other 3 sensors too. This was my first time working on a Jag interior and I was very cautious. Total job took me about 4.5hrs. Now that I've been through it once.. I bet I could do it a 2nd time in about 2hrs.

Tools.. I didn't record exactly what is needed. But memory says.. two different torx bits. One was a T15 and I think the other was a T20? Phillips screw driver, plastic trim prybars, a magnet to help prevent dropping screws into the I.P. neverland, and a small mirror.

Excellent post, i have my rad and CVV on the floor ,out through the top as it's a 1999 ,i moved the cowling and undid those awkward 8mms and it wriggled out ,this is such fun .. New belt while i am there mind, oh and i am fitting a pre heater and oil pan heater too ..lol Si

I know it's been a while but is this procedure for the drivers side only or for the entire cabin both left and right. My Jag buddy at a local parts store that worked on Jags told me there is one for the passenger side under the glove box, and the passenger side is where I am having issues. Thanks

Your buddy may be steering you wrong, depending which sensor you suspect is misbehaving. Please see this troubleshooting guide and work through it step by step:

Don't just skip around hoping for a fix. The guide is organized by the symptoms that are present. Be sure to first test the DCCV (Dual Climate Control Valve) as detailed in post #2 at the guide. This part has a VERY high failure rate and is often responsible for temperature problems which appear on one side only. I'm not sure of your exact symptoms, but if the DCCV tests okay, you probably want to run through the next tests in post #3 for erratic operation.

If the fault boils down to a bad sensor, 4 are located inside the cabin. The one shown in the pictures above is the cabin temperature sensor, and there is only one for the entire cabin. Access is difficult, as you can see above. If you have erratic temperature output on one side only, this sensor is not at fault. The other three sensors are located in the center area near your feet, and access is better less bad. Two are located on the left side, and one on the right. Post #3 at the troubleshooting guide has more details on these three sensors.
