Default Jaguar S Beautiful car 2 Major Problems

I have my car at the transmission shop. You would have to put it in 3 to move forward then you could slip it into OD and she would work fine. They want to totally rebuild it for $1750. I love the car enough to do that but I still have one more problem that may take me over my limit. My steering is bucking me as a turn it quickly. I had a mechanic look at my suspension and he says all is tight. What is wrong? Its a beautiful car but it is close to going to the salvage yard. Its mint condition what do I do and whats wrong with Tranny and steering. Who knows if the transmission lab is even correct. I have to decide by Friday..

What year model is your car? That makes a difference as to what the transmission problem may be....

The descriptions given are pretty vague. Either fault could be low fluid levels or could be components that are just plain worn out from age and mileage. Impossible to diagnose without further details.

It seems that you are reliant on garages to do any work. This in itself will make ownership quite expensive as compared to many of us who DIY. If there is also mistrust between yourself and the garage over diagnosis and resultant cost, it might be time to move on.

Another vote for DIY. It's just too costly to rely on repair shops.

Or, find one "independent" shop that knows Jaguars, that won't chase ghosts and work at a fair price....

That's a fair alternative.

FYI, even mass market cars like a Ford Crown Victoria or Cadillac SLS needing transmission rebuild get estimates of $2,500 from multiple repair shops- even AAMCO. So, $1,750 is actually a decent deal. Frame of reference were family members needing such work in the past 6 months.

My 04 STR has started bucking the steering wheel on quick hard right turns. (Only right turns) I haven't looked into this yet, but I bet there is a thread on this problem. I suspect worn internal rack bushings that cause the rack to move up and down resulting in rough feedback to the steering wheel.

My guess on the steering would be a worn pump not making enough pressure or maybe a pressure control valve issue. I doubt it would be anything mechanically binding, most likely a hydraulic issue. I assume the only way to know would be a pressure test. If the fluid is grungy you could try changing it, never know.

My 03 str has that steering issue only if turned quickly like in a u turn !
It feels like hydrolic cavitation! I have changed the fluid twice in all hope ,
But no joy ,, a good freand of mine is a ford mechanic
Here and noticed the pump is identical to the 04 and onwards ford Falcons, in witch are pronouned to give this same issue , and the ford fix for this problem
Is a replacement pump ! So my guess is the jag pump will be the colprit too !
P.s mine does it in both directions left and right.
I was tempted to buy the new addative for the steering wheel squeak TSB ! But I think would be a waist to have to drop it out to do the pump so I'll put up with two issues till I find a new p/s pump I think.
