New cooling fan
Need to find switched 12V source to power new fan. Help?
|
What vehicle? What MY? Why is this being done?
|
2001 S-type 4.0 - replaced original non-working fan with OEM fan, after replacing fan relay on original with no results. Need to wire into switched 12V to power new fan.
|
Use search function on this forum and read about wiring issue behind front bumper. You cannot just run a wire as the radiator fan is controlled by the ECM.
Use the Electrical Guide to troubleshoot the issue: http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto...x2022001en.pdf |
Thanks for the info, the wiring manual will be handy!. Understand original fan has to be controlled by ECM and relay. Removed original assembly and replaced fan assembly with a 12V, 16" fan that runs on 12V without all the other stuff. All is installed and fits perfectly. Just have to find a switched 12V source to tap to run the fan.

Hello Wayne,
How did it go with your fan mod? Also, what fan did you buy? The 2nd speed for AC on my fan is no longer working as it should and having a hard justifying $700 for a new fan. 04 XJR |
Sorry but I replaced the radiator cooling fan, not the AC fan.

04 XJR FWIW, when the fan quit on my '02 S-type, the only available replacement was the entire motor/blade/shroud assembly. The motor was not available separately, at least new. The armature was chewed up on my old motor, but I found a good used motor on eBay. The brushes on that motor were worn about 2/3 of the way down. I found some universal brushes of the same original size and replaced them. That was several years ago and this used motor is performing flawlessly. The used motor and new brushes were only about $75 at the time. |
Yes Wayne, I'm referring to the radiator fan. Sorry about the confusion; the radiator fan cools the A/C condenser as well which is why I'm interested in your replacement. My radiator fan seems to have gotten lazy.
How did it go with your radiator fan mod? What radiator fan did you buy? How did you hook it up etc. Yes kr98664, I'm definitely in the wrong forum, however the info from Wayne's universal fan install will greatly help for research in case I decided to follow route. Not much luck to this question on the X350 forum. Glad to hear about your rebuild. Good stuff! Do you happen to have a write up or photos? Where did you source your brushes? Many thanks. |

It's been a while, but I THINK these are the brushes I used: Amazon has a huge selection if you search for "carbon brushes". Add a dimension (10 mm, just a guess) to narrow down the list. Sorry I can't remember exactly which brushes I used. I ordered about a half dozen varieties to experiment but can't find my notes. |

No photos, sorry. I do remember the nut securing the fan blade had LH threads. Also, all that carbon dust from the worn brushes makes this a VERY messy job. Disassemble the motor on some newspapers or similar disposable material.

Awesome! This definitely provides an option.
Thanks a bunch! I started a teardown on a used fan motor for a rebuild but seem to be stuck. Have a look at my pictures here and let me know your thoughts. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...d-fail-219818/ |

Yours did not look the same? It should be the same fan for the S Type.

Edit: Here's a picture I saved showing the part number. The brushes are under the end closest to the connector. The far end (bottom of the pic) has the shaft for the fan blade. You can't see much of the shaft because of the camera angle. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...ca2fc69ad9.jpg |
Gotcha! Looks like the fan motor changed at X202 model. Thanks again. I managed to tear down a little more. I'll post updates on the other thread.
Thanks again! |
