Which one do u think is best out of the three? Due for an oil change and want to use a quality oil and filter.

Hey Mikey............

Oh boy here we go.

Gus 02-26-2015 02:53 PM

Yes Rick here we go again!

Let me start this off by saying I have one in my XK8 "130,000mi and in my S-Type 120,000 with NO ill affects.

Let the fun begin!!!

JagV8 02-26-2015 03:20 PM

OEM for at least the first year of trouble-free ownership so that if any faults pop up you're not wondering what to blame.

Any oil at all that matches the OE spec.

Which 1 are you referring to
Never mind.. I see you are using k&n

tony1963 02-26-2015 04:30 PM

Oil/filter from Wal Mart at regular service intervals is fine.

Royal whatever and deluxe filter = wasted money

Are you referring to the air filter or the oil filter?

Gus 02-26-2015 08:55 PM

For me it is the air filter I should read the header the next time. As for the oil filter i use Fram and had no problems with them change the oil every 6,000mi

Let's put the question this way...

Has anyone had any bad experiences with any oil, any oil filter or any air filter with their Jag?

My initial question is in regards to the oil filter

JagV8 02-27-2015 01:26 AM

Several have suffered with non-jag air filters not fitting, oiling the MAF etc, and posted so. A bad oil filter may result in no car & no posts so we won't know.

Not in my time with Jaguars.

I use whatever I can find on the day at a fair price. The fact I "throw away" the oil and filter every 6 months, I see no reason to get carried away with brands, and super dooper whatever. Never had an engine failure ever.

All the Jags up to and including the X300 ran Mineral oil. The 2 S Types run Full Synthetic.

The odd air filter, as said, that did not fit due to a manufacturing blunder, more than a brand issue.

I change the oil and filter every 6 months regardless of KMs travelled. The air filter every 2 years. Done it that way since 1968.

Oh brother Grant, are you trying to get Mikey up on the wrong side of the bed? :icon_naughty:

Grant Francis 02-27-2015 06:56 AM

Nah.

It spins clockwise down here, so all sweet.

Most of my driving until very recently has been very long distance at very high speeds, so the oil etc is mostly HOT, and very little time to cool down and get all sludgy.

Sir Arthur (S2 XJ12 in my garage) has topped 550000lms now and has had that oil change procedure in place since we got "Him" in 1994 at 190000kms. Still running sweet, its a V12, nuf said, and it still leaks from the tappet blocks the same as it did in 1994, so who cares, not me.

The X300 now has 210000kms, and has had that same procedure since I got "It" in 2010 at 135000kms.

The 2 "newies" get the same and NO complaints to date.

The X350, when it happens, will be done the same way,

It aint broke, and I do not intend changing my ways now, too old and grumpy, as the kids say.

JagV8 02-27-2015 07:06 AM

Changing oil & filters so often does seem rather wasteful, but it's your money.

Mikey 02-27-2015 09:08 AM

I have no objection to owners wasting money on unnecessary oil and filter changes or using overpriced boutique oils and filters either. It's their car and their money.

I do get slightly shirty when a person claims some sort of unsubstantiated benefit or infers that bad things will happen if others don't follow suit. It's quite probable that all of us have some quirky maintenance or operational habit or two that we believe strongly in, but stating that they are beneficial or mandatory is almost guaranteed to start a fight.

The question was posted above about anyone having negative experience with a given product. I'd be surprised if any evidence surfaces.

The 10K interval is when using standard dino oil. Jag does not comment one way or the other about a different (presumably longer) interval when using synthetic.

Hi Sonspit,

I can never resist joining the fun of an oil and filter thread. If I'm not mistaken, your AJ-V6 engine is a version of the Ford Duratec V6, so the original equipment "Jaguar" filter is in all likelihood a Ford part. RockAuto carries the Ford Motorcraft oil filter for your car for $3.37, and I'd wager that aside from the brand name and graphics painted on the filter body, it's probably identical to the filter you'd get from a Jaguar dealer.

As far as I've been able to determine, Jaguar has never made any of its own filters. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) include Mann+Hummel, Mahle, Delphi, Bosch, Valeo and Visteon. For the V-8 engines Mann is probably the most common OEM.

If you just can't bring yourself to spend only $3.37 on a Motorcraft filter, I like the Wix brand filters stocked by O'Reilly and NAPA, and I confess that the brand name "Royal Purple" arouses my natural skepticism.

Cheers,

Don

This is a photo of my XK8 4.0 with the valve cover off. I took this photo about 2 weeks ago. Fram oil filters and Mobil One Synthetic 10w-30 motor Oil. The frequency of oil changes were 6.000 to 8,000 miles most of the time at 6,000.
