Performance Upgrades?? Supercharger??
Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and to Jaguars. I recently purchased an 03' Jaguar S-Type 4.2 and am loving it. The only thing is it could use a little...well maybe a lot more power. I'm coming from a 400awhp subaru so the 300 crank stock hp just isn't cutting it. In retrospect I am wondering if I should have just tried to find an S-Type R, but I got a really great deal on this car. I tried doing some research already on how difficult it is to convert an S-Type into an S-Type R(just the motor). Im wondering if you can bolt on a stock R supercharger and if you find a stock R ECU to hook up will it run right or is the engine completely different all together. The one problem I was forseeing and it seems someone on this forum hit a similar snag with their xj8 to xjr conversion is that the compression on the engines is different. If going the supercharger route is not a viable option what options do I have for making more power. I was thinking about a full custom exhaust from the header all the way back to get rid of the extremely restrictive stock exhaust system. Besides that, a performance intake and Engine management or chip are all i have found searching the internet. Any thoughts, advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

I hate to be the one to tell you, but the engine is completely different so the supercharger add-on is out. The internals (pistons, cam, compression, etc.) are pretty much all different. As is the computer, suspension, transmission, even structurally the car is different. If you haven't fallen in love with the 4.2 you could probably switch without spending too much money. The price of R's is in the toilet right now and I've heard of people picking them up for under $13K! These cars are quick for how heavy they are, but it's never going to compare to a big turbo'd subaru. The performance modifications (that actually increase hp) are limited and getting the power to the ground is quite difficult with the lack of a LSD. If you want a fast car and an S-Type you really need 2 different cars. Low 12's in the 1/4 is the *absolute* best you will ever see from a highly modified S-Type R and that's still not very fast. Sorry for all of the bad news, but I would rather have you not hate your car after spending tons of money and it still not being that fast. The only other car I was considering over the R was a Pontiac G8 with the LS2 or LS3 and the GXP version with the 6 speed. But now that Pontiac took a dump idk what to buy. Eric

Hey, thanks for the info. I do love the car already and Im not looking to make huge power gains as I do intend for this to be my daily driver and to start another build on something else(undecided) in the near future. Knowing that the supercharger is not an option...does anyone have any power numbers for full exhaust inc. header and intake. Im sure that adding these simple mods will give me the placebo effect of feeling as though the car is much more powerful than it is.

Yeah full exhausts do sound amazing on these cars. Both supercharged and N/A. If your going to do it definitely put an X pipe in, that's where I picked up the most low end torque and top end power. Free flowing mufflers free up some top end horsepower, but kill you mid-low range torque. As far as headers go, your going into uncharted territory there. I don't think they've been attempted yet because of space constrictions. Let me know what you decide, I can help you out as much as I can, I know the car pretty well.
