Potential purchase of 01 S type 3.0?

Was looking at buying a 2001 S-type with 56k on it. It needs a steering rack but is a very clean car inside and out. Is $6k a fair price? Brakes and tires are new. The steering wheel sticks when turning and the tie rods and ball joints have been ruled out as the cause. What do you think?

Get a second opinion. Beware that 2003's and earlier are prone to having problems. Do your homework!

I don't know about your local market but that seems a little steep for that car - You realize the rack is over 1,200 installed right? Is the rest of the car immaculate? Is it a V8 or a V6 car? Are you sure the rack has the proper amount of fluid in it?

The miles are right, the price is good IF the car were ok.

I''d be very weary of a car with known problems such as this however.

check to see if the additive has been added, my rack was a little sticky until I flushed the old fuild added the additive to the new fuild. and smooth as silk now.

An '01 S-type? And with known faults? Def. a case of caveat emptor here. It's has GOT to be cheap, you are taking a risk. Nothing wrong with that so long as it's a calculated risk. Make a list of known faults, partic. checking the gearbox for lurches, noises etc. Does the recorded mileage seem right for its age? Look at seat wear, how the doors shut, if the driver's door sounds 'loose' compared to the others. Just remember EVERYTHING about these cars is expensive, get quotes, ask around. Then make your decision with a cool head. Of course, be prepared to walk away. There'll be another car tomorrow.
Leedsman.
p.s. At £4000 he's not giving it away...

Insinuating a drive by poster? :)

I think that is high esp with known problems. Mine is a 2002 3.0 and I have it listed for $7500. Mine has more miles 94K, but no known problems. I personally wouldn't get another pre 05 S Type. I do plan on an 07 STR.

I had a Ford mechanic look at it. I can get a rebuilt rack installed for $300 total. Lifetime warranty. There is no other issues with this car. It is in great condition. Older woman owned it. New brakes and tires. Needs nothing else. So considering that, $6k sounds pretty good?

KKOSH 06-03-2010 09:09 PM

are you serious? You really need to take a good look at yourself in the mirror and get a life.

Where are you going to FIND a rebuilt Rack for $300 - much less find one installed??

Please tell us, that would be a great parts resource if it's true.

I thought the reman racks were in the 650.00 range. The inner tie rods alone are $280 from Ken @ British parts.

Itwaz a guess George. I purchased a remn from Napa 6 years ago for a Pontiac we had and it was just over a bone-fiddy!

KKOSH 06-04-2010 04:49 PM

Well, new rack is in an is much improved but I do need new ball joints. Any opinions on what brand to use? Ebay (DP)? I saw macauto also sells them. Thanks everyone for the help.

Actually Never Mind. The remanufactured Steering Racks are $230 for the 00-02 @ rockauto.

With the facelift and the suspension redesign, the 03+ rack is $650 @ rockauto.

Well ain't that a kick in the rear.

George
