Question Prestone anti-freeze any make any color

My owners manual for a 2001 S-type 3.0 specifies a certain type of anti-freeze. I wanted to know if anyone has converted their Jaguar to the new Prestone any make any color currently on the market.

I also own a 1999 Chevrolet LS 1500 ext. cab 2WD pickup and a 2003 GMC SLT 1500 Yukon XL 4WD SUV. I have converted both of them from Dex-cool to the new Prestone formula two years ago. I have not experienced any problems with these vehicles.

What about my Jaguar, will the new Prestone formula work?

You may be a pioneer. Not something I'd chance.

There are some forum members that know alot about this antifreeze. They started with green, then when to yellow in the 99's, then went to other colors. We now find out that antifreeze is not generic--it all has different qualities. Jags have specific needs with so much aluminum in the cooling systems.

You might want to search the tags for some very long postings on this subject.

I ran it for awhile in a 2003 S-type 3.0L after a rad. hose assy change. Everything drained from radiator and block that would drain, but no flush or anything. I'll try to find the dates/mileages sometime this weekend between when I did that and when I took it to Motorcarman for delaminating crank damper and he changed it back to Jag-freeze.

No problems when I had it in there nor since.

Yup, very commonly available and not expensive to boot. Jaguar and not expensive in the same topic? Wow!

Hey, I did the fuel filter and I expected it to cost 10x as much as it did!

I was looking at all the national auto parts stores for the yellow Xerex GL-05, and finally found it in the back room @ O'Reilly--not on the shelves. They're the only store stocking it locally.

O'Reilly stocks it for a local fleet user (for their Superduty diesels), and can get it brought in special order. Now it comes in gold gallon jugs.

Try this Zerex G-05 full concentration, just buy yourself a one gallon of distilled water to dilute to get a 50/50 mix http://www.amazon.com/Zerex-ZXGO51-G.../dp/B0033QNZZ0

Don't be fooled by Zerex bottle, they sell the 50/50 mix in the one gallon bottles that look the same as the full concentration bottles.

Hey Motorking,

Thanks for the post. That's good to hear. I'm curious, though, does it mix OK with OEM or require a system flush before use? Also, since you work for Prestone (and were very upfront about it), I might expect you to say "no problem." I honestly don't doubt what you say, but if there's imperical data you can share, I'd find it of value.

Thanks again!

Dale

Thanks!

This topic has been discussed at length in previous threads going back at least a couple of years if not more. The bottom line is this - if you have a car that was factory-filled with the orange long-life coolant, make certain that whatever fresh coolant you decide to pour down your hatch meets the M97B44-D coolant specs. If it does, that fact will be printed on the coolant bottle's label (could be on the front, could be on the back)....

My jug of Jaguar OEM orange long-life coolant does. So does my jug of Prestone Dex-Cool orange long-life coolant (which is used in my wife's 2004 Lexus RX330, never causing any issues with that vehicle)....

So check that label carefully regardless of what anyone tells you about coolant compatibility. If the label does not indicate that it meets the M97B44-D specs, I wouldn't risk it. Too many horror stories out there with people using various makes and colors of coolant and then developing gelling problems afterwards....

I called O'Reilly's and sure enough they had no idea they carried Zerex G-05. I used the above quote plus their own website. They took a look in the back and they had a whole case of it. It was $16.99 plus tax.

Something to note:

Motorking introduces himself on various automotive forums as "technical manager" of FRAM, PRESTONE or AUTOLITE, depending on what HONEYWELL CONSUMER PRODUCTS brand is under discussion at the time.

If it's a Jeep forum, he owns a Jeep. If its a Honda forum, he owns a Honda.

FRAM used to make good filters, then got bought/licensed by HONEYWELL.

PRESTONE used to make good antifreeze, then got bought/licensed by HONEYWELL.

AUTOLITE used to make good xyz, then got bought/licensed by HONEYWELL.

HONEYWELL is now primarily a *marketing* company.

There is also some reliable indications that both the Universal and Dexcool products put out by PRESTONE contain 2-EHA which is the A in OAT and the inhibitor component that Dexcool detractors point the finger at. The difference being that they pay a license fee on the jugs labelled Dexcool. Prestone has become extraordinarily vague on disclosing the chemical composition of their antifreeze products.

They dominate the bigbox market due to legacy shelf space arrangements and consumer ignorance. Not because they have a superior product. Make no mistake, many brands *pay* for shelf space in the bigbox chains.

On the other hand, Zerex is a great product that fights for shelf space.

At some stores, they have a tiny corner of one shelf at the bottom. That tiny corner gets emptied out as soon as it is stocked. The many Prestone shelves at eye level remain full. Maybe the merchandiser for the store will finally notice what sells like hotcakes ... when they happen to have stock.
