rear sub frame getting weak with rust
 

2002 s type jaguar v8 sub frame is starting to fade near the right upper control arm. Is it a must to switch the whole sub frame or is it alright to reinforce and weld? She's been parked in underground garage every year except for 2. Which sub frames are compatible ? Im guessing 99-02 are the same.

You can use any S-Type up to at least 2004,or VIN# N30693. You can also use a Lincoln LS rear subframe.

Nice, that increases the chance of finding one thats not rotted out also. So any year and engine Lincoln ls sub frame will fit right or only up to 04 on the ls too ? I did some searching and saw your post that u had this done already. Where'd you get yours replaced my shop is asking $1000-$1400.

I did for our local Mazda dealer's shop. If I had a shop, I would not quote a price until I had seen the car and the rear frame to be installed---if it needs a set of mounting bushes they are not cheap.


I think any year of the Lincoln LS will be OK .

We lifted her up a week ago, although im well overdue on a rear subframe. They actually made two bushings on an 01 s type they had there three weeks ago. It was getting the subframe replaced for the same rusted out area near the upper control arm. I remember thinkin this will make life easier when I finally gotta do mine.
Do the subframes come with the mounting bushes from the scrapyard ?

Normally,but the alloy in the bushes is often corroded. Also some wreckers often cut the sub-frame to remove the differential. You could try Berkshire Motors up in Thornhill.

There are 2 different generations of rear sub frame. They both mount using the same holes, so from that perspective they are interchangeable. That being written, The Gen II Jaguar sub-frames have a mounting bracket that fits the electric E-brake motor. If you have a manual pull E-brake lever than you would have to deal with this. Even though the Lincoln LS sub-frames are the same for all Model years, they added the E-brake mount in 2003.
Best to buy one up to Model Year 2002.

If you purchase a used sub frame in decent shape, might be worth grinding or blasting off the rust and paint it, or get it dipped and powder coated. Wont rust away again.

$1K to 1,4K doesn't seem too bad for Labor. 2-day job, 1.5 mechanics, At $60/hour that's about 24 hours labor.

Is it possible to remove the e brake on the newer frame and do without the handbrake? In the 12 years I had her might of used the handbrake lever twice. Only ever used handbrakes on standard cars

I used an 05 LS rear sub frame for my Custom build rear assembly. (Pics are posted somewhere on the forum). As I recall, I ground apart the welds holding the e-brake electric motor bracket to the frame and removed it. The other difference is where brake cable retention hooks/mounts are located. In my case, I put in a Mark-VIII differential, so I was welding on new mounts and removing the e-brake bracket was easy.
