I'm fairly sure gentle cleaning with the right solvent (if any) ought to be OK but as there's no RPM change what is the point? The problem isn't an engine surge so cleaning the TB isn't going to fix a non-problem.

Jaguar do say NOT to clean the S-Type TB, precisely because of its coating & it being a precision device. I'd want a compelling reason to make me override that. Don't see such reason here.

The only surge cause that seems to occur on the S-Type is never from the TB but rather from the TC, I believe, in any case.

From reading the many posts... more data, accurate data, is desperately needed. More action isn't, particularly unfocused action.

Frankly, I really don't care if you clean your throttle body or not. I'm certainly not going to make a compelling argument, do what you want.

As far as being a "precision instrument", good lord. Its a butterfly valve with an electric motor and sensors.

If cleaning your throttle body won't change things, then your torque converter is shot any you might as well replace the whole transmission while you're at it.

Glad to be of help. Bye.

Jaguar do say NOT to clean the S-Type TB
They also say you never need to change the AT and SC fluids... We've seen on this forum how many problems have been fixed by not listening to that advice!

They do NOT say that. You're out of date.

It is regrettable that some members meet an idea with total hostility. Unfortunately, those same people may not have experience servicing and repairing vehicles.

Throttle bodies need to be cleaned periodically, to avoid drivability issues. The coating helps defer the accumulation of carbon and deposits and is sensitive to volatile cleaners. However, there have been appropriately safe cleaners since Ford started the practice in the early 90s of giving the throttle body a coating.

I went back to see what you posted on your first post and this one and like others have mentioned you are giving us what others are saying is a possibility but we want to hear from you what the car is doing in order to help you. We need a little more input. Do you have an OBDII code reader that you can plug into the car as you are driving? If so do just that and drive the car and see if the reader captures a temporary code.

Is your car surging or is it a misfire? You were told it was a transmission problem is the car lurching and can you feel the transmission struggling? Have you put the shifter selector in “4” and drive it and if you did you have the same issue? What is the fuel you are using and have you added any fuel additives?

When I first got my 2000 S-Type 3.0 I had a slight miss that did not throw a code for about a week or so but when it did it was a failed coil pack. Your issue could be many things from engine trouble to the trans so, give us a little more information from your experience.

Remember we are providing input without having seen the car.

Tony 1963, Rhinoman was not the one who was arguing with about the cleaning the TB nor questioning your abilities. I appreciate all of your input and expertise. Thanks to everyone for your help.

Tony 1963, chill out and relax a little, you made a suggestion and people challenged it, that's what a forum is. Some also agreed with you. The post I made about jaguar saying don't clean the throttle body was not having a go at you, it was relaying a fact, helping the OP make a decision, if you disagree with a post, state your reasons calmly and rationally.

Bare in mind some people on here have very limited mechanical experience and my take good meaning advice without realising the consequences.
