Default Take a look at this. this can't be right?

2002 jag S type. 3.0

so i have been hearing a slight rattle coming from under the car at low RPM's (thinking is might be a loose heat shield) so I jack her up to take a look. and I get down toward the transmission and now im getting close to the noise. and I look up to what I believe is the torque converter and I see this gear spinning around. I was like "WHAT".... this cant be good. so I turn the car off and get back under to take a closer look. looks like a cover plate is missing. the edges around the hole are smooth and look as if it was meant to be there but the cover may have fallen off and now is open to the elements.

so my question is to this Forum is. What the %*#@ is going on with my transmission/torgue converter? my trans is running and shifting fine. so what is going on and how do I fix this. also, isn't his supposed to have tans fluid in it. and if I can cover the hole, how do I get the right fluid into this. this one has got me scratching my head and with no answers.

thanks
Jeff

My cover disappeared after having a new rebuilt trans installed. If you find the part number - please share by all means... Thanks

Here's the JTIS section showing the rubber plug in place in the top drawing and removed in the bottom one:

However, I can't find the rubber plug listed in the Jaguar Parts Catalogue!

Good work Steve and Jeff. Check out SNG Barrett - they have them listed for $4.90 each (before forum discount) Just ordered 2 (just in case the cover is missing on my 04 XJ8 - this part is also compatable with the X350 models also)

The S-Type 3.0 part is different than the 8 cylinder XJ8 part, just FYI

To answer your other question. It's just a dust cover/inspection port. No oil behind it as you found out.

well yes and no. with the cover in place it is almost unnoticeable. but without the cover you can hear a, i hate to use this word...Growl... it must be coming from the torque converter or from withing the bell housing. it only "growls" at low RPM. as the RPM's go up the sound goes down. I say growl because its not a sound like a quarter in the dryer sound. its a loose part sound. im going to try to make a quick video of it and the sound and try to post it.

so as the torque converter becomes active, it stops growling/rattling? as i rev up the engine the noise is greatly reduced. i think there is a drain plug for the converter, so I was thinking of draining the oil. but then I dont know how to replace. sorry I new to some of this type of repairs. and dont want to make it worse.

Im giving a WAG now, but seems like something might be loose inside the converter?. or is this sound normal?

thanks for all the great posts.

Jeff
