Vibration

Hi,
I'm getting a vibration that I can feel in the gas pedal and a howling noise between 35 and 40 mph. It's not extreme but it is noticable to me and as usual the tech could not hear or feel anything. Anybody have any ideas. I think it's the trans. 2003 S-Type R.
Thanks.

Tires, driveshaft, rear diff.

Does it only happen at certain speeds?

I always notice it between 35 and 40 mph. As soon as I hear the howling and feel the vibration I look at the speedo and it's right in that range and the R's are at around 1700. I'm not sure what gear it's in though.

At that speed it would be in 4th if the rpm's are that low!

That's what I thought and I know that there was a service bullitin issued about that but it says vibration in 4th gear during warmup and mine is all the time.

Does it fluctuate if you steer right or left?

Could be a bad wheel bearing.

A drive shaft or rear diff vibration would be felt at the seat,

I don't think you would feel a trans problem through the gas pedal. Is it the pedal only that vibrates, or that's just where you pick it up?

RE: Vibration

It feels like somethings is tugging at the car intermittently when the vibration and howling starts. The whole car has the sensation of a slight vibration but I can also feel it in the gas pedal. I also noticed yesterday that with the windows down I hear a high pitch squealing that goes away when I apply the brakes. I'm starting to think that it is a wheel bearing like Envy said. I did have a caliper seize causing enough heat to warp the rotor and maybe it also overheated the bearing. It does seem to be getting a little worse.

I think Envy hit the nail on the head.

Good news, I talked to Jaguar and wheel bearings are covered by Select Edition so I am going to bring it in next week to have it checked out. Now I just have to get them to admit that it is a bad wheel bearing!
Thanks Guy's

Vibration solved!

I have lived with this vibration I feel through the gas pedal for a couple of years on my 2008 Stype 4.2 for several years. I have changed front wheel bearings but that made no difference. There was no indication of rear bearing wear through movement not the car was not as quiet as it used to be. I am getting close to 200,000 km. so I changed out the rear wheel bearings. It is not an expensive job, especially if you have a buddy with a press and is quite doable on your own. Car quieter but mostly the vibration in the gas pedal is gone.
