On my 94 the "motor" or "pump" and the bypass valve are on the right side on top of the battery and relay rack, under the carpeted battery cover.

I had the same issue and some nice person here mentioned that I should check the upper engine cross brace on that side, and sure enough it was loose. Made the same noise your describing,

Spot on. I removed the low side fitting and the 5lbs of pressure in the system shot that ball valve across my garage into oblivion. I will have two new valve-core style fittings here tomorrow...

These are sadly 1st generation 134a ball valve style soldered right to the hard line. AC is probably the only way.
