It sits between on the top radiator peg and underside of the front slam panel.

I have heard similar when the imv on the injection pump is faulty, causing over pressure on the fuel rail, this causes the ecu to open injectors to dump pressure, as a sort of safety valve.

Pressurising the system should make any leaks show themselves.
Otherwise dry all the leaks and run the engine up to temperature on the drive, whilst looking for any leaks starting....

The x type has negative camber on the back wheels, so tends to wear the insides edges of the tyres.
Worn top and lower control arms cause extra negative camber also....
