Post Power steering pump and rack overhaul?

Hi!

My Iron Lady (1989 XJ-S V12 RHD) is losing quite a bit of ATF from the powersteering pump and the rack. So I plan on overhauling both.

The steering rack has loads of life in it yet, as it doesn't grind, nor is it juddery. It is nice and smooth but leaks on the left hand side. So I'll be overhauling it at the same time.

Has anyone done this job on both the servo as well as rack?

I've found part kits via SNG but before I order them: is the job managable for a quite skilled self-taught mechanic? I'm no newbie regarding repairs and co, but I also learn by doing. As I have a second PS-pump in my spares collection, I'm willing to risk it.

Any tips? Parts recommendations? Tool recommendations?

Cheers in advance!

Damien

After 14 years on various auto forums, Jaguar in particular, I've concluded that DIY steering rack overhauls usually don't work out too well....but let's wait to hear from others with direct experience.

As for the pump, well, it's probably just a matter of partial disassembly to replace leaking seals. That should be relatively easy

Do you have the shop manuals?

Cheers
DD

Hi Doug,

cheers. Well, I don't really need to replace the entire rack, basically just the bellow and seal on the left. So that should be easy enough. A full overhaul is probably just me doing it ALL or NOTHING

Regarding the manuals: yes, I've got the German workshop manual, but that oddly is so "confusing" when it comes to continutity. Pages missing, filed later, etc. As a "rough" guide it is fine...

Well, I have the pump in pieces... If you know what you're looking for, it is quite easy...

Everything visible is from the pump. ALL parts have been torn down and it is all in pieces. Just waiting for the new rubber seals etc. and will then seal it again... Though I might compare this one with my one still fitted (was my spare one) to see which one is in better condition... This one has done around 100.000 miles, where as mine only 78.000 miles.

Well, power steering pump has been done. If you know what you are doing: a piece of cake!

Steering rack is due next! Followed by the piping and the cooler... All with the engine in place

Hi Daim,

I know this is an old thread, but I'm rebuilding my pump ATM and I am trying to find a new shaft bush as mine is worn. Did you replace the bush and if so where did you get it?

Hey Warren,

I did not have to replace the shaft bushing, as mine was still within the tolerances.

If the shaft has shot, I'd recommend getting a recored pump internal. They cost about €30 on Rockauto. Waste of time even fuss ing around with that. Just need the rubber rings to seal the pump and you're off again...

Thanks Daim, I found a bush kit and I bought a good pump from a local Holden for parts. Most of these pumps are the same except for the valving

My shaft is worn 0.02mm and has a score behind the pulley flange, and the bush is worn eccentric.

Daim thanks for the pictures; and warrjon for renewing it.
What ever happened with the steering rack re-sealing....is there a link to your post you could post here for me?

Hi Daim

I’m wondering how you got the pump circlip removed ?
I’m missing a groove allowing me to get a lever under the circlip.
It’s not critical to get this disassembled as the leak is at the o-ring seals, it would just feel better if I change the axle seal as well...

If you look on the outside of the housing about 12 o'clock from the valve there is a hole. Push a pin punch in there and the o'ring clip will be pushed out the lever it out with a screwdriver.

Be careful when you pull it off as the vanes could go everywhere.

Thanks Warren

I took a read in the ROM before going to bed yesterday, and the instructions confirm that there must be a hole to push in the clip.

Sorry for not answering. I am barely home nowadays so time to write a message is quite rare. I carefully levered it out. With a fine screwdriver...

Thanks Daim. I had noticed you have been quiet for a while.

So no hole in yours to push in the lockring ? It's probably the same on mine then. I can also see that my drive belt pulley is mounted in another way than what is shown in the ROM...

I don't recall there being that hole. A simple careful pry did the job though...

Hi Daim

I have the lockring and end cover off now. Pins are pulled, and the rests sticks in place. I suppose this is just oil sticking of flat parts ??
The ROM shows a different drive belt disc fixed with a central nut and as I read it I'm supposed to tap the axle and pump out from the drive side. This is not possible as I see it.

The good stuff is that your picture of all parts shows same axle/hub as I have and you have managed to disassemble it.
How did you proceed after getting the lockring and cover off ?

BR Leo

Below is the hole clearly visible on both pictures as is my different-from-ROM hub.

If you've gotten the circlip out, then the large metal disc should carefully wiggle out. Behind that should be a spring. I remember mine needed a bit of fiddling...

Thanks, I will take a look at it. I have the pressed steel cover and the conical spring removed, and then I’m stuck...

Sticking oil was holding things together. Most things came loose after tapping the housing onto the workbench, the rest after removing a tiny lock ring retaining the axle
