Default Any shake in your steering? Am I being ****?

My car has a little shake in the wheel.. It gets better to worse depending on speed and pavement. It's not dramatic, but enough to make my watch shake with my hand on the wheel. Based on how tight the suspension is, I'm wondering if I'm being overly ****. A friend who tracks thinks the alignment may be off since the shake has never been perfect. It could also be the new wheels. I had just gotten the tires balanced with the first oil change (it shook then) when I took the stock wheels off.

Anyone else run into this?

Thanks!

Mike

nothing to do with alignment; it's the wheels/tires/balance.

2 cents,

Those that have done spacers; just the slightest contact of the eom lugs to the back of your wheel will cause shake. Wheel will never rest 100% flat on the hub. I bet 25% of the folks that have spacers installed have wheel contact.

Full disclosure; I DO have a slight "shimmy" in the steering wheel at a very specific speed (around 65mph) .....I'm reasonably sure it's the wheels/tires and plan to have the balance redone and check it out when I swap to PSS's

Whether the car's on nearly glass smooth road or rougher pavement, everything is buttery smooth until 70 at which there is a small vibration. From 70-75 its a light vibration and as soon as I hit 76 or go higher, the car vibrates and causes my hands shake like I have late stage Parkinson's and the seat turns into a massage chair. Dynamic and sport modes don't impact this, but rain mode can mitigate it.

I'm hoping it's just the tires rather than the suspension going into a crazy over-correction mode.

If it gets worse with speed - particularly above 60mph - the problem is wheel balance. So either you've thrown a balance weight, dented a rim, or have a weirdly worn tyre (for which there will be another reason)

You may need to get the fronts rebalanced - maybe they didn't do it right. It wouldn't be the first time i've seen a balance done poorly.

OR one of the wheels aren't mounted correctly - see note about spacers - also you can jack it up, loosen all nuts, wobble it around a bit and retighten gradually and evenly.

Thanks for the input everyone.

It's a RWD. No spacers.

It's now been balanced 3 times, so maybe the new Ferradas are out of spec.

I didn't think alignment, but my friend who tracks was showing me how bad alignment will make the front end shake. It pulls to the right, so I know the alignment is out as well. We just put brand new tires on the front today, so that eliminates the front tires anyway. One more trip to the shop, then I'll put the OEM wheels back on and see what happens.

I have owned my F Type since new in 2014. Had a set of MPS4's installed a few weeks back and decided to take it in for a full alignment.

I was astonished at how smoothly it drove after the alignment. As I drive it almost daily I guess I got used to the gradual increase in tramling and nervous handling. After the alignment it feels so planted to the road and drives straight and true, no tramlining. I have so much confidence in the handling again.

I would say book it for an alignment.

I have a bit of shimmy with braking but smooth as butter when driving.

My recommendations....

1) check tire pressures
2) Check tire/wheel balance
3) check alignment.

If all looks good, consider a "road force balance".

Another thing to consider would be a bad strut or shock.

Best of luck finding the source.

So - warped disks, worn suspension or steering bush?

No vibration up to 150 mph. (It may be smooth beyond that, but I haven't had an opportunity to find out.)

Is there any menu setting for the car to display what it measures the different tire pressures at?

Yes. Push the menu/enter button on the wheel, scroll up to vehicle info, push menu/enter button again, scroll to tire pressure, push menu/enter button.
