Default Fuel tank L/R switch operation

This may be a dumb question.
I got my 84 started started today but I had to hold in the change over switch for her to run.
The switch is out showing the white band for RH and will not stay pushed in . However the 85 switch behaves the same.
Am I correct in thinking that it should stay pushed in so you don't see the white band?
Also the owners manual says there are illuminated arrows indicating the tank. I don't see any arrows.
Any input appreciated.

Yes, the switch should stay in when depressed.

The bulb for the arrows might be burned out....but they're rather dim anyway. Hardly visible unless you're in very dark surroundings

Pushed 'IN' activates the left side tank and return. 'OUT' activates the right side tank and return. When pushed 'IN' the switch should stay in that position.
I had that problem on my '84 and the advice I was given on this forum was to spray some lubricant and exercise the switch which worked for me.
I have not seen any arrows on mine. I know if the white band is visible (switch out), the right side tank is being used. No white band visible (switch in), left side tank is being used. I used a lubricant for electrical components from ACE hardware.

No lights visible in mine. and the white band on the edge, just barely.
but, it does swatch tanks just fine. so, I merely memorized, "left in, right out".

Side bar: This "new" keyboard seems to be responding to the Jaguar mantra". Exercise sticky keys to restore function!!!

Thanks for the advice, I'll certainly try the lubricant.
In time I will be re-laying out that part of the dash so I may go for a toggle switch.
I was laughing a bit I found replacement switches on ebay for $500 ea and $34 ea !!

That sure sounds like government procurement.

Keep us posted.

I myself am planning some layout and switch gear changes in the center panel....but they're a bit down on the list at the moment.

There are supposed to be 'arrows' very faint on the switch.
Red arrow is the PORT side, Green arrow is the STARBOARD side.

Green arrow is at the top and the Red arrow is at the bottom on the face of the switch.
Can see it better with back lighting.

in my 1984, the switch has a band at the bottom of the fascia which lights Red when the switch is pushed IN. The Red light goes out or is not seen when the switch is pushed OUT. As far as I know, it is the switch that came from the factory since I have never replaced it.

The arrows that he refers to must be on the left side of the switch, since my car has 1 printed arrow indicating "push" on the left side of the switch.

Jose, that rings a vague bell with me but all I ever seen, FWIW, is the type with arrows

I think it's the map and pillar light switches that have the bars

Just order parts number DAC1356# from SNGBARRAT'S
and for US$ 41.99 you'll get a brand new OEM part on your doorstep.

Elinor's switches are very similar to the Series 3, and you can see the red band at the bottom of the fascias that lights up when you press the switch.

there is not a second bulb for the red bands, they just reflect or "light up" when the switch is pressed in and the red band is closer to the bulb.
