Default F-type 3.0 380bhp vs Alfa romeo giulia 2.9

Had a look at a friends Alfa today, it's the alfa romeo giulia 2.9 V6 Quadrifoglio, So you that has the technical knowledge , how does the alfa romeo giulia 2.9 V6 Quadrifoglio produce 510 bhp top speed of 191 mph, where as the F-type 3.0 V6 only produces at the top spec V6 380 bhp top speed 171mph.
Is it that the F-type engine in now behind the times in the power class, well in V6 form. The new 2.0 at 300 bhp is nearly a match for the 340 V6.

I have read that the Alfa V6 quoted power figure of 510 bhp is a bit exaggerated and it's closer to 480/490.
Yes, it is a much more modern design than the AJ126 which is essentially a cut down AJ133 (V8) which itself was designed back in 2008.
I have also read that it is very similar in concept to the AJ126 in that it is essentially a cut down version of the Ferrari V8.
It is also twin turbo with the boost wicked up pretty high, it's easier to increase the boost on a twin turbo than it is on a SC.
I also believe the F-Type V6S top speed is limited to 171 mph and the true top speed is closer to 180 mph.
Last but not least my VAP tuned V6 puts out 450 bhp so not that far behind the Alfa V6.

When you're paying for Alfa repair bills on that engine in a few years as every previous Alfa owner for decades has known, you'll understand why. And when Alfa abandons the US market sometime in the future as they've done in the past, think about what parts are going to be like to obtain and what they'll cost. At least with the Jag, no matter how few cars they've sold in our market, they haven't pulled out and cut off parts supplies. Now in Alfa's favor, they handle very well and are a joy to drive when running properly.

It's a shame that upgrades have to be done such as pulleys etc to get near some other manufactures now, maybe jag should have dropped the superchargers and went down the turbo route a lot sooner

One thing to consider when buying a low displacement high boost engine is working RPM. If you need 2500 RPM to cruise at highway speed vs a V8 that cruises at 1250 RPM, every 1 mile driven is like driving 2 miles. Plus the high stresses will experience blowby sooner, reducing engine life and power sooner.

Friend at Jaguar tells me the inline 6 is out soon and it will generate more power than the current 6 and more efficient.

Perhaps there was some marketing involved in it as well. If the V6 S produced 450hp, it would probably be as quick as the R due to weight savings, so you would have hero model confusion. Over here at least the R is probably $80K more than the equivalent S.

Also the highest output 6 is now the P400, which is the same engine just tuned better. I've driven one on the track, the difference is noticeable though I thought more so at low speed acceleration rather than top end.

I've had an alfa. I like the look of the giulia (about the only car that I would buy in white for myself) but I dont envy anyone who gets one. Alfa's attitude toward warranty issues is pathetic, the build quality is pretty horrible, and the paint is so thin you'd think that the painter was paying for it out of his own pocket. That said, they look great and drive nicely. But overall the ownership experience is not a pleasant one.

Yep, I'm thinking that as well.
I had my old XFR tuned to R-S spec, so exactly the same tune as the F-Type R, and I'm convinced my F-Type is quicker everywhere except maybe outright top speed (which I have never tested on either of them).
I went for a drive in the country yesterday and a few times I gave it the beans to overtake a slow poke, and the acceleration from around 60 mph to "lock him up and throw away the key" amazed me yet again, it threw me back into the seat and just kept pulling and pulling, far more so than I can ever remember in the XFR.

Probably not. With 450hp and 140 lb weight reduction, my car now has the same nominal power to weight ratio as the V8S (495hp). The R will still easily outperform in acceleration ( but won’t be nearly as nimble).

Do you think that outperformance is at the 0 - 60mph, or over 60mph? I know in my XKR the party piece was over 80kph where it was maniacally fast, and I've also noticed that on track days where the R's kill the 6's on the straights.

A V8S dynos 495 to the wheels. I don't think there is a practical difference from the R except the marketing.

I have a 2014 V8 S and my wife drives a 2016 V6 S. The only similarity is the badging. The V8 is hellashly faster, and easily rips off 3.2 to 3.5 sec 0-60 mph depending on traction.

My V8 dynos 495/480 whp/torque stock (not bhp as claimed) and 535/505 whp/torque tuned, but it doesnt seem a whole lot different to me either way with all the excess power. There is a lot left in the curves which I'll chase after the V8's 7 year warranty expires near 2021.

And as said above, V8 high end acceleration between 50 and 150 is intense. The V6 lacks torque from rest compared to the V8, and the V6 hp seems overstated by Jag to me, not understated like the V8 S. Its possible that the V8 R is a restated V8 S to keep both claims inline. I havent dynod my V6 because the difference is too big to invest in both.

Agreed. That’s why I specified “nominal”.

Cheers, yeah I was thinking more in the case of the V6 that had been tuned to 450hp that Unhinged is talking about. But yes, I've seen plenty of people saying that the R times (4.2 to 100kph from memory) are understated and the S times look to be pretty accurate (around 4.7). I had the XKR with the same engine as your V8 S, the stated times were about 4.8 from memory but due to traction issues it would never have been close, the F type though is a completely different suspension setup.

Yeah, and as far as real world performance I was just treated to demolishing a local Hurican Spider, again. With only 570/398 bhp/tq in his V10 and 7-speeds, the poor guy has no chance against my 535/505 whp/tq (est 600 bhp) 8-speed V8 S. Our torque curve passes 450 at 2500 RPM and is nearly flat after 3000, so we don't need 9000 RPM to make power. The F-Type is a beast.

I have owned my 2017 alfa Romeo giulia quadrifoglio for 3 years now. I have had her on the dyno as have many others and we find the HP to be actually understated at 510hp. I have a few cool cars and the alfa is simply my favorite. it is so nasty fast...it is actually hard to describe how she builds power in third gear and beyond.
in first and second she is simply a wheel spinning mess that wants to hurt the driver while in race mode. drive one and you will be convinced
