Hi all,
just had email clarification back from both the assistant manager and GM of Langley Castle

Our brief visit on the day of the 16th is approved, this for a photo opportunity of the cars / members in front of a stunning Castle and surrounding scenery.
As discussed with Bob, I hope to perhaps arrange a further / fuller meet / run specifically to Langley Castle in the future at some point. We could look at lunch, castle tours and more.....

Note: Please respect the surroundings and be aware that there will be other people there using the facilities, not just ourselves.

Should be a good stop point and photo opportunity for all concerned
Any David Baileys out there??

Jim

Hi all,
Rich (Ashanti) and I have been talking for a little while now about an informal meet / run event shortly after Crieff. This isn't designed to be similar to the event just held last Sunday, more an impromptu meet and run event, a convoy of like minded enthusiasts from Penrith to Haydon Bridge.

The date is Sunday July 16th
The plan is to meet at KFC, Bridge Lane, Penrith, CA11 8HW which is just off Jctn 40 of the M6 Link
We'll be looking to meet there at 10.00am and congregate, gathering the convoy together in preparation for the run

We'd be leaving KFC at 10.30 am for the run. The designated route will be along the A686 from Penrith with the ultimate destination being the Anchor Hotel at Haydon Bridge. The Anchor hotel seemingly does a nice Sunday roast from 12pm, £10.50 per person www.anchorhotelhaydonbridge.com

The route is the A686, A road worthy of driving allegedly, see here...... www.drivingroads.co.uk/hartside-pass-a686

"The actual Hartside Pass is only small part of this route, but the whole of the A686 is an excellent road to drive, so why just stop at once you have done the pass, complete the whole road and have a huge smile on your face after getting to the A69 near Hexam."

There'll be no prizes or raffles as per Crieff, although if I can, I may rustle up some "welcome packs" to try and include itinerarys, dashboard info sheets, forum decals, pens / pencils etc and anything else I can rustle up.
The route takes a little over an hour, around 1 hour 5 mins which should see us at the Anchor Hotel for around 11.40am there or thereabouts, with lunch starting at around 12pm

I've had an initial conversation with Steve, the Owner / Manager of the hotel and he reckons on spaces for around 15-20 cars, but may be able to accommodate more.

So basically a run to the gathering point, then a convoy to the meet point along some good driving roads, lunch followed by some craic and a little banter, putting faces to names, some veteran meet attendees and some new ones possibly.
Anyone up for it, please add your name to the list below and pm with your name, car details and mobile contact number. As usual I'll send text updates with info etc in the run up to the event on the day.

Well, we're only now 10 days away from our run / meet event on the 16th!

I spent some time tonight and got around 15 welcome packs sorted out for the day, I had quite a lot left over from the Crieff meet and so thought it worthwhile. The banner is also looked out ready for the day, it'll be good to get some fresh signatures added to the many already there from past events.

I'll send out a text over the next day or two to remind everyone, and also a group text to the Scottish contingent travelling. There'll be an interim meet point for us all and we can convoy down to Penrith for those interested, a pre run convoy if you will. The sight of around 9 Jags or so in convoy on the M74 / M6 should be a sight in itself somewhat

Weather for the 16th is supposed to be fairly ok, mostly sunny, a little overcast and perhaps a light shower or two, so fingers crossed for more sun than clouds
Look forward to seeing you all there

Jim

Kicked the day off early, up at 6am and as it had stayed dry through the night, gave the car some fettling due to the monsoon we had over the previous day or so. That took an hour or so, then shave n shower and off to meet the Scottish contingent at Strathclyde park. Originally we had arranged to meet at Bothwell services but due to M74 closure this was not possible, I had seen signs about it and also checked on Scottish traffic website and so had informed others.

I travelled along the M73 to the M74 and thought I'll just follow the diversions ( there were none??!! ) so popped into Bothwell services and bought a latte, as you do, then off to Strathclyde park....there were already a few there waiting, Cameron McFarlane, Glenn65 and Robcoop, I made 4 and shortly afterwards Keith (Caldean) showed up and we were 5.
Everybody laughed as the M74 WAS NOT CLOSED and I had messed up somehow.....had to hold my hands up to that one!!!

Danny (Pegasus3710) had called off due to a steering rack issue and John Finnon due to work commitments, so were just waiting on our token F type driver, Davy Kerner. I called him to see where he was and he'd slept in lol
No problem says I, you'll catch us up.
He said he couldn't make it? A 5.0 Supercharged V8 and he couldn't catch up.......maybe they're not as good as they say they are? lol

Off we went in a steady 70mph convoy, I got in touch with Bob XJREcosse and we arranged to collect him along the M74 and met up soon afterwards, were now 6. A quick call or two back n forth and got hold of Seg & Ann, they had stayed the night in Carlisle and so would meet us on the road, we duly met around junction 43 of the M6 and were now 7 strong.

It was only another 10-15 mins and we were at Penrith where Simon ( Super350) was waiting, then FastEddie arrived shortly after.
I'd had a call from David Reece (1955Davidr) to say he was on the way, I'd also checked in with Alec Escolme....he too was out washing the car earlier and would be there on time. A call sometime earlier with Ashanti and he said there was an S type on his back bumper, was he going to the meet. I made a quick call to Fletch and sure enough, it was him right behind Ashanti, couldn't have planned it better.

Even more so as they picked up Alec along the way and so another 4 were on their way. They all arrived in good time and we were 13 strong

We all mingled and had a little chat here n there, welcome packs sorted out and off we went, around 5 mins ahead of schedule.
Now for the next part, bear in mind that the KFC was only around 100 yards or so from the roundabout!!

We left as loosely together as we could , Simon in the lead followed by me, Rob coop and a few others...onto a long straight and I could only see around 6 cars so we were about 5 short somehow?
Got a call from Ashanti and looks like a few others had followed Alec and took the wrong turn.

We slowed down to almost a crawl to give them a chance to catch up, but after a short while had to crack on and enjoy the run. After all they'd have all the fun "catching up".....

With Simon in front we set a good pace and really enjoyed the twists n turns, scenery was great too, a really good driving road. We hit Langley castle around 11.35 am and parked up in sunshine in stunning surroundings, got out and mingled, took pics etc......there will be a few posted I'm sure!
Set off again around 11.55am on schedule for Haydon bridge and the Anchor Inn....I'd made a call to Steve the owner and he'd reserved the entire car park for us!!

When we arrived we had to move the chairs and Audi that were barricading the car park, as the streets were narrow we caused a bit of a delay to the one car that was oncoming traffic lol. We all got parked up and started to have a laugh or two. Ashanti managed to get a window cleaner or similar to let him borrow his ladders, climbed them and took a group photo...nutter.

There were a few others as Simon had brought along his wife and daughter, Rich ( Ashanti ) had his neighbour Martyn with him, Ann was with Seg or vice versa lol, Glenn's wife was with him and Cameron had brought along his lovely neighbour so about 19 in all.

Steve had also set aside the snug just for us as a group, so we settled in and table service ensued. I couldn't believe how busy the place was, but service was good and the food was awesome, and plenty of it too....Roast Pork for me, there were choices of Beef, lamb or chicken too. There were stories in abundance an plenty of laughter ( quite a noisy bunch lol )
Of course I had a cigarette break or two, came back in to pay for my lunch and found out that Cameron had already paid it........Thanks so much Cameron, a really nice gesture and much appreciated.

After that it was outside to enjoy the sun and each other's company, cars and mods were checked out and discussed.....all good fun.
Slowly we started to leave one by one, around 3pm I left along with Fletch and Rob Coop, Colin ( Fletch ) took the lead and we elected to go back along the A686 and REALLY enjoy it.

Colin set a really good pace in his 3.0V6 S Type it has to be said. Although mine is the 2.7 she's been remapped but she's more a limo for cruising rather than rallying, but I thought I'd give it a go and pushed him along nicely I though, really enjoying the straights, but wondering how I'd get around the hairpins lol........we did ok.
Had we left around 10 seconds earlier Colin wouldn't have to worry about a leaper on his bonnet, more like a deer through his windscreen....missed him by inches it has to be said as he bolted across the road.

Hit the M6 and then a steady drive home.....what a great day.

Really enjoyed the cars, the drive and scenery as well as meeting some really cool people and having a laugh or two..........one of the better Sundays it has to be said.

Thanks to all who turned up and made it the day it was
Jim

Great writeup on the day Jim - it looks like you had all the elements that make for a great Jaguar day out, and the day went well for everyone with not even a deer harmed :-)

Based on this, I definitely need to try out that run as and when I next get a chance to get up country and in your direction.

It's great to get to see some pictures from the day, and your hard work pay off - esp with the weather sorting itself out for the day :-)

Default curses to have missed it

Disappointed to have missed it, but in the end couldn't have asked the 8 year old to spend 4-5 hours in the car.

But I know the drive well, and coming only from Lancaster so not far. Sometimes we drop someone off at the Buddhist Monastery near Alston and continue on up the A68 Roman road to Edinburgh.

And an x308 would have made a nice backwards extension to the timeline of cars.

A lovely day by the looks, but I didn't waste it. While you were enjoying the sun I was replacing 5 of my 7 blown speakers.

I hope to join you on the next.
