Jaguar S-Type 4.2 V8 alternator.
Hi Has anyone got any advice on changing the alternator ,I've tested the fuses and are ok ,I'm going to get it up on the ramps and look at at the plugs and positive terminal to try and get a voltage reading at the terminal,it went a few weeks ago whirring noise and battery light on all the time then it just went away I tested the battery with the engine running and it was fine giving 14 volts whilst running so I thought alternator was fine and battery light went off, it has come back and I'm not getting anything at battery from alternator ,battery giving 12.6 volts when engine off but only 11.6 whilst engine is running .Do I need to lift the engine to remove alternator as it says in the manual or is there another way of doing it,any advice appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Yes you do have to lift the engine. You also have to remove the engine support bracket along with the engine support mount.
I am currently engaged in this process and am waiting for my 3rd alternator as the one I bought, supposedly new OEM, did not erase my battery light and it did not produce adequate voltage at the new battery terminal.
I also tried a "local" alternator repair place who stated that they could repair my 2005 Jaguar XJR alternator. When I arrived at this place they took a look at it and said they could not get the parts so wasted 2 plus hours on that fiasco.
The one I am waiting on is a rebuilt unit so we will see.
Of course it may not be the alternator which is very worrying to think about.
The battery is one that is recommended in this forum.
Btw I get no fault code at all.

Hi Have you followed the pinpoint process to eliminate anything else as there could be several issues that will give you the battery light .on my 2005 s type 4.2 V8 engine it is Pinpoint test F,it gives a series of electrical tests you can follow to pinpoint the exact fault as it may not be the alternator. You can read them in this free manual available for download.

I could not find the alternator pinpoint tests anywhere in my workshop manual.
There are all sorts of other component pinpoint tests but none that I can find on the alternator!
I will fit the new alternator when I get it and use my JLR SDD software to analyse any faults.
With the last alternator, which I returned, I did get a gearbox fault. That was something new.

Hi did the link work for you , if not i will try and copy and paste the pinpoint check for you.I am going to attempt to change the alternator tomorrow after i complete the rest of the pinpoint checks on the alternator itself.Unfortunately its pouring down and i will have to work on it outside ,and jack up the engine if possible whilst i remove the engine mounts to get at the alternator, the engine is pretty much crammed in there so there is very little room for access to the alternator,i cant even see the + lead from above so hope to get at it once i remove the bottom engine splash panel. Not looking forward to it but i love my jag so i will have to do it.Just wish i had a garage.
Thanks.
Steve.

Once the battery starts to drain everything shuts down as i experienced a few days ago, i had gearbox faults also ,then the instrument panel shut off, windows stopped working and eventually car ground to a halt about a 1/2 mile from home ,luckily i have a spare battery charged up so just swapped it to get me home.Because it rely s so heavily on the battery to run everything it shuts everything down one by one and i think last to go is the engine spark, although the gearbox stopped working and it felt as though the brakes had started to come on i did manage to crawl into a car park to swap the battery.

The link downloaded thank you Steve however I cannot find the pinpoint test you refer to.
I have my car up on ramps at the front with an engine lift across the engine.
I removed my SC intake as I think it would hit the rear of the engine compartment.
I removed both lhs and rhs engine mount bottom nuts and then raised the engine as far as I dared.
I found that I had to dismantle the engine mount from the support bracket that attaches to the engine so that I could remove both separately.
The top alternator mounting bolt was difficult to access as it is almost impossible to see.
I ended up taking out the airfilter box completely to reach the belt tensioner pulley and used a block of wood in the bottom of the air filter area to support a lever that rotated the tensioner and held it in place.

Btw the thing that took me a while to figure out in removing the alternator was the fact that the upper bolt is fixed in place.
After removing the nut on that bolt and then removing the lower nut and bolt I swung the alternator up and then slid it towards back of engine and off.
That was after disconnecting the electrical leads.

When I look at pics of it I see that it definitely would not fit on my car.
The closest match I found for my Denso alternator was from Car-ID. Of course this is after I ordered this reman that I expect to get tomorrow.

Good luck!
I went to U.M.I.S.T so I know what the weather can be like there.
I just realised that if you do have to take out the alternator you will have to drop the steering rack as you have rh drive?
I wanted to change both engine supports but try as I mighty could not budge the steering drive shaft clamp so will not bother with that task.

Hi Supamacca1966. Did you manage to replace your alternator?
I am waiting on my "next try" alternator that has a set point of 14.2 volts and a higher amperage. All of the previous ones I tried had significantly lower set points.
This one is supposedly new.
I will also replace my engine ground cable as I notice the current one looks a little shabby.
