Very different cars of course, two doors and a back seat that is for cosmetic purposes only vs a sedan that can actually haul more than two people and the children won't get muscle cramps. I love the XK8 and XK and would certainly enjoy having one as a "weekend toy" but the XF is a far more practical daily driver. Besides the obvious, the longer wheelbase should help with ride comfort which is an issue the older you get and the longer the government puts off road maintenance. Another thing is the XF "blends in" with all the other modern sedans in any parking lot (car park to you I think ) so unlike the more exotic looking XK8 you can leave an XF anywhere with no more concern of theft or vandalism than a Mercedes or Lexus. And for the same money in an XF, you should be able get a newer car that ought to last longer with fewer issues and maybe include some more modern technology like I-phone pairing and a back-up camera. But if its just going to be a "toy", then buy the XK8 as they're probably getting near to being fully depreciated by now and if you don't rack up a lot of wear and tear, it'd be almost like driving for free on the weekends. That's what I would do, or wish I could do.

thanks. i dont have kids so not bothered about the lack of room in the back.what i am concerned about is the governments attitude to diesels, plus the new ulez ultra low emission zone in LONDON,which means paying a daily charge if you drive a diesel into it.

There are plenty of petrol XF's around at the price if diesel is the problem.

I would still go for an XK8 though, much classier.
8 grand will get you well in to XKR territory.

I don't think that they did a diesel XK8 and a petrol XF should certainly match an XK8 for fuel consumption.

Smart .. and Fast
XFs is the car for you, quick = sub 6 secs. loads of toys if you get the right model. Let Celtic tuning 'tiggle' it for you and you have a very respectable Brisk car
