Broken Stud Help!
Hello,
I need some help with extracting a broken bolt on my 98 XJR. I have zero experience with this and did as much as I could but would like more experienced hands to help. It's a small bolt on the coolant outlet pipe in the block. Bolt is sticking out from the block and not completely inside. Could anyone help? I'm located south of Seattle. THANKS! |
Is this something that got cross threaded in? Or was it rusted and snapped off? What is the diameter of the bolt shaft?
Easy outs are the norm for extracting them, sadly I tend to do more damage than good with them. Obviously some penetrating oil should be soaking the part right now. Sorry I'm not able to help.... V |
The Region forum is a strange choice to post a technical question unless you are asking for a member to come to you and remove it?
The General Tech Help or X308 forums would get wider views and probably more replies from members familiar with the various techniques for broken bolt and stud removal. Graham |
Go to Home Depot and buy a screw extractor set, and a universal tap handle and a small set of drill bits if you don't already have one. Also you might get an "Automatic Center Punch" while you are at it.
Also have your drill motor charged and ready to go, a pair of vice grip pliers and a can of a penetrating oil (many of us use WD-40). See about generously soaking the area where the broken bolt is with the penetrating oil. Let it penetrate for 10-15 minutes. Then:

just use a Dremel with a small cutoff wheel , cut a slot in the top and take out with a screwdriver/ drilling on that small a bolt usually ends with more issues to fix
