Default Who knows anything about the XJS?

$2200 for a red 1994 6 cyl. Pretty car. Actually runs and drives smoothly. Cosmetic stuff is showing its age. Good deal for a fun project? Thoughts from the locals who might be called on to help? Asking for a friend, of course.

Cosmetics are the most expensive to fix.

If you can live with the poor paint it might well be worth snapping up at that price. It probably needs attention in many areas but if you're a decent DIYer most of the mechanical repairs can be done at surprisingly reasonable expense.

Thanks Doug. I think he's going to pull the trigger. Even with a little paint work I don't think he can go wrong for that price.

One advantage of the six is that you can actually get your hands into the motor. Looks like a good start. Always best to buy an up and running car.

I don't exactly qualify as "local" but .......

We've seen a number of XJS turning up on the forum recently. A reflection of the rising status of this much maligned model. Most of these have been in far worse condition and requiring major surgery to the bodywork.

OK - a V12 would be preferable but that asking price is good for a runner and the vendor would probably drop to $2k if they just want it gone.

The interior could soak up the same dollars again but overall it looks an easy project for a low investment.

It’s inexpensive for sure. They seem like they’ve been going up in price. However, a new paint job and leather seats will cost a lot. There must be mechanical issues too.

I bought nice leather seat covers for the front seats for my 95 on eBay. I forget the price, but without installation I think they were less than $1,000 for the pair. Installation was like another $500. They turned out nice. Cheaper vinyl ones were available too but getting vinyl would be a mistake. They’d be way too hot in the summer. The 94 model has the older brake system that isn’t as safe. A 95 or 96 has the improved and much safer system. For that reason alone, I’d only own a 95 or 96. There have been owners who complained about total brake failure on earlier than 95 models.

I’ve had many XJS’s over the years and I love them but I’ve never had a reliable one, even when they were just a couple years old. I wish they were more reliable because they’re wonderful cars. Finding a mechanic in the Seattle area is a challenge too. Performance-wise, they aren’t much of a sports car. Handling sucks and they are under powered compared to the V8 Jaguars produced beginning in the late 90’s.

After saying all that, I think an XJS is one of the most beautiful cars ever made and I miss owning one sometimes.
