Fix for the S-type shifter assembly

We've finally come up with a repair for the S-type gear selector that constantly snap the white plastic piece inside the shifter. We developed a metal replacement. No more broken shifters!!!!

Ken, is it advisable to replace this part before the plastic one breaks? Can the vehicle still be driven when the plastic one breaks or do (we) call for a tow? Are the plastic ones prone to break on the lesser horsepower S's, when the the selector is not "shifted" like a NASCAR/Indy racer?

Thanks
Rick

Sorry to be so slow in answering this. No need to replace it until the plastic breaks, but once it does, you're screwed. The car will not shift gears. You are stuck. The plastic will break eventually. They all do. Most typical cause is it won't want to come out of park and folks force it. The shifter cable can also bind and folks try to force it and break the plastic piece.

Rick,

I spoke with Ken about this issue today just out of curiosity since it pops up on the forum from time to time when various owners complain that their gear selector won't shift and their car is stuck in the driveway. Ken said that he sees this problem ONLY with 2003.5-and-older S-Types. He believes there was a re-design of the shifter mechanism starting with the 2004 model year. So our 2005 cars should be okay. I guess time will tell....

Jon, I am glad you spoke with Ken to clarify my question(s). Thank you for posting your conversation with him. The "soap-opera" in the "S" discussion has had my attention for the past several weeks.

hi
which year s type's have this problem ir all years ,
does this apply to 2002.5 str ?
thanks

Norri 09-10-2011 06:34 AM

You have an STR so will have the 6 speed ZF box, so this fault will not apply.

I think all the older cars must be fixed now, I can't remember the last time someone said they were stuck on a hill.

The selectors that fail are for the Ford 5R55N gearboxes.

This has just happened to my S-Type (2002 model). My garage is waiting for a replacement selector mechanism. I'll probably have to mortgage the dog!

You can replace the broken plastic part or find a salvaged part in the 'bone yard'
You might want to use the Revised Selector Lever Cable
You can also modify the gearbox.

This thread was posted in October 2009 and the OP was last on the forums 5 years ago.
