02 x-type died on freeway
I have an 02 X-Type with 75k on it, and while driving at freeway speed the car just died. Turns over and will not fire. I spreayed carb cleaner in throttle body and it will run till burned out. Should I assume its a fuel pump and go ahead and replace or are there any other simpler causes that could be suggested.

I would start with fuel. Did anything happen before it shut off or did it just stop?

RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
No, nothing happened. No indicator lights or anything. Just died. When I got to the side of the freeway and let it sit for a minute, I cranked it over and it started and idled real rough for a sec but as soon as I gave it gas it would die. Now it just wont start at all.

RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
stupid question, but we should start at the beginning... you have gas in the car right?
|
RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
LOL!
thats pretty good. I would ask too if I were you. Yes the tank is full. I just found a schematic on the fuse box and I am going to check the fuel pump control module fuse. If it could only be that easy. |
RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
no such luck. not the fuse.

I know it doesn't sound related, but check the air filter too. I had something similar happen on another car a few years ago. The engine would run briefly, then die. It was the weirdest thing because the engine sounded fine (no hesitation or rough idle) when it was running. Turned out the air filter was clogged.
This might not be your problem, since you described rough running, but I would just quickly check the air filter to rule out a simple potential cause. |
RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
boy, that sure SOUNDS like fuel pump.
Does the X-type have a bump-switch to shut off the fuel pump? Ford's been doing that for 20 yrs or so.... |
RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
yeah they do.... in the passenger side under the front plastic trim. It shows it in the user manual.

RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
When you turn the car on, do you hear the fuel pump turn on? You should hear a sound with the chime. It's pretty distinct, but hard for me to describe.

RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
to me it sounds like the landing gear going up on an airplane... but faster.

ok, I am convinced that it is a fuel pump. I cannot believe how much that pump is! I did find one on ebay used and got it for $65. I am being quoted anywhere from $460 to $750 for a new one for just the part. What is the deal with that?

RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
Ya, I found the reset button under the dash on pass side. I depressed it and nothing.

I'd sure be checking voltage to the fuel pump before plunkin' down that sort of coin.

RE: 02 x-type died on freeway
I don't know if this helps but I have an 02 x-type with roughly 75,000 miles and my engine would keep cutting off when giving gas on the highway. My mechanic narrowed it down to the fuel pump. that pump is expensive! After replacing it, never had the same issue. I know this happened to another member here with at similar mileage. strange right?
