1st time Jag owner w/ Intermittent Tranny Problem? HELP!!!

Hi everyone. I justpurchased a beautiful and well maintained 1994 Jaguar XJ6. The car has 115k on it and drove perfectly on the pre-purchase test drive. The next time that I drove it, the car shifted VERY hard and FORCEFUL into all gears with a loud "clunk". [:@] A light came on the dash, the top corner picture of a tranny with an X on top. I got home, turned the car off, started it back up and it drove perfectly again with no dash light on. The car now goes from driving perfect to this strange shifting problem about every other drive. Has anyone else had this problem or know offhand what the issue may be? Any advice on where to begin? This is my first Jaguar &my first venture into the European car market altogether. There are no Jag dealers anywhere near my area. My Husband is a master Honda technician, so is mechanically inclined and is not afraid to address the problem himself.....just hoping for a little advice from avid Jag owners. Any help is much appreciated!!!!! Hopefully this is a common AND easily repairable problem w/ Jaguars!!! THANKS in advance to anyone w/ advice!!!! ;)

Welcome !
Intermittent culpirits are one of the hardest things to diagnose . I think a good tranny shop can help you . The clunk noise can help the origin of the problem you mentioned
PS-This thread needs to be moved to XJ40 section thus we have some guru members to help you in there .
