2004 jaguar xtype 3.0, steering wheel shaft snapped
Yesterday, the steering wheel shaft of my wife's 2004 xtype jag snapped while she was driving. She had no steering control but she managed to stop the car along the shoulder of the highway. The steering shaft was hanging near the brake peddle but appeared to still be connected to the steering wheel. It was no longer attached to the axle. We spoke to our insurance company and they said it seemed to be a mechanical problem. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? It seems like a long shot but we intend to file a claim. If the claim is not approved then I guess our only alternative is to take it to a mechanic ourselves. Any suggestions?

A failure of that type should be reported to the Transportation safety Board, or whatever regulatory authority handles recalls and vehicle safety in the USA.
It will also help you get attention from Jaguar USA.

I agree re: reporting, however I expect this repair will cost less than your deductible. You might want to pursue this through Jaguar, as it's a problem that the factory might want to know about and cover out of goodwill.
Spoke to jaguar. They are looking into it. Will get back to us within 2 days. I said the shaft snapped but it looks like the rectangular metal block piece at the end came a loose some how. It did not appear to be broken but may have been connected to the axel via bolts or a slot connection or some other means. I will try to take a pic whenever possible. The car is still at the towing company's lot and will remain there at $10 dollars for the next couple until we hear from jag. Thank you all.
that sounds good. Best of all, of course is that your wife was ok. I can't think of a worse failure to have.
