aaaah-ha!! found my vacuum leak. wtf is this part called
 

A round cylinder plugged into the top most portion, left hand side of motor, and has electrical connection plugged into it? Part of the gasket up top of it is blown out and causing issues with cels. Can I replace just the gasket or do I have to replace whole part?

Hello Matt..

Yup, that is the typical leaker..both of them should have their "O" Rings replace..My dealer calls them the 'Throttle control valves' others refer to them as IMT valves..

The bottom one will not come out all the way, but you should be able to stretch the new "O" ring on over the front part...


While on the subject; there is a couple of other areas that cause the same vacuum leak issues..one being the stiff vacuum tube and check valve going to the Brake booster..and the other one is the large (~3/4") PCV hose under the Plastic engine cover..check them out while you're at it..

Already took care of the pcv. I will check the brake booster. So that part IS the IMT and throttle control vlave I've heard so much about? That's an EASY looking fix. Its on top of the motor and super easy to access and only held on by 2 bolts

Apparently advanced auto doesn't have these o rings so I'm gonna have to go through the damn dealer. I hear they are like 30$ or so eh?

85, recently folks have been getting the IMT o-rings from the dealership for only a few bucks each.

Is that right mohrd? I'm going to have to look into that. Thanks a ton guys, you never let me down!

Just make sure you do both of them. If one's leaking the other one probably is or will be soon!!

these are the 2 IMT valves. My lower one was the one that was leaking, but originally I thought it was the upper one. replace both as it is hard to pinpoint where the leak is actually coming from with these. It's cheap and easy, as I mentioned in previous posts and threads. Each ring was $2.15 at my Jag dealer and it took me about 35 minutes to do, and I have 0 technical knowledge about cars.

You guys hit it head-on! Both valves are leaking! Good call guys. I duck taped them until I get the replacement o rings. Thanks fellas!

Ouch! You used the bad word. The dealership will know exactly what you are referring to without a part number.

Actually I took another look at them today and they look like they're designed to have a small indentation at the top of the cap. They are sucking air in but like I said it looks like it's designed that way, although I can't fathom why anyone would design a car with a vacuum leak... I'm going to take some hi-rez shots and post them later to show what I'm talking about.

There should be NO SUCKING sound at all..They are not suppose to leak anywhere around them...
