Can I Tow A X-Type Behind RV?

Hey Lads,

Looking to unload my BMW X5 to pick up a towable vehicle for my RV. Stumbled upon a 2002 Jaguar X-Type with a 5-speed manual transmission. The car is still all-wheel-drive though so I wanted to understand if the car is flat-four towable at all?

Thanks
Bernie

Even X-Type is AWD but unlike the auto trans., I think with manual gear box you can put in neutral to tow it on rear wheel.

razorboy, I am pulling this information from the service manual. So, I would trust this information much more than just a generic "this applies to all AWD vehicles". The manual states that when flat towing a manual X-Type, the following should not be exceeded:

-A distance of 30 miles (48 KM)
-a speed of 30 mph (48 KPH)
-ignition of the car left in the "RUN" position to prevent the steering from locking
-gear selector in the neutral position.

For reference, the same rules apply to an automatic tranny except for the distance. That is now 0.5 miles (0.8 KM). So, pretty much, if you have an X-Type with an automatic tranny, that is pretty much telling me that you shouldn't flat tow it period. Only flat tow in an emergency.

Of course there is the normal "follow all your local regulations" statements which should be a given. They also seem to be adamant about using a tow rope and the front tow hook.

You should never lift one set of wheels off of the ground and then tow an X-Type. In short, the transfer case is going to attempt to spin atleast one of the front tires and result in damage to either the car (CV shaft most likely, potentially the transfer case) or to the rig lifting the car off of the ground. If you are in Europe and have a FWD X-Type, then yes, you can lift the front wheels off of the ground and tow it like any other vehicle. But, none of these cars exist in the US.
