CEL Common issues?

Hey, my girlfriend just noticed that her CEL was on today. I have a scanner at home but wont be able to get to her car for a couple of days. Anyway I was just wondering if there is a really common CEL related issue on these cars.
Also I was reading somewhere about checking the codes through the display? Is this possible? If so how is it done?
Thanks

(her car is a 2003 2.5 x-type)

You could always send her to Autozone to get the codes read (if she's in a rush)!

Yea i know, I have a scanner here at home, I was jw if there was something really common. I know with my car 8/10 if you get a check engine light it has to do with the throttle body, so I thought maybe there was something like that with the Jag.

At this time of year, lean codes caused by vacuum leaks.

Ok, code was P1647 Any ideas about what usually causes this?
Thanks

SVTMFL, the code you have is "P1647 Linear O2 Sensor Control Chip (Bank 2)" That would lead me to believe you have either a bad O2 sensor (heater portion of the sensor has failed) or the wiring to the sensor is bad (wire is grounded to the body of the car). For reference, Bank 2 is the side of the engine nearest the radiator. If this doesn't fix the issue, then you have a bad ECU. But, based on what is most likely to fail, the O2 sensor is your most likely suspect.

ok, thats what I figured from what I had read. Does this code cause driveability issues? there are none with her car atm. and from what i have read from other people with the code, they dont have driveability issues either...

Thermo 11-25-2010 07:33 PM

SVTMFL, this normally will not cause a driveability issue, but may affect overall mileage. Could possibly see a slight loss of power, but it won't be too significant.

ok, well finances are going to be kinda tight for the next couple months, will any long term damage (ie cats) be done by putting this off for a month or so? btw she only drives short distances like to work and school (only about 10 mi each way) so its not like we will be taking any long trips or anything.
Thanks

The code is just telling you that the 02 sensor read out of spec. As already stated, could be bad wiring, could be a bad sensor but it could have just been brought on by bad gas, carbon build up lugging the engine uphill (subarus are famous for this). Did it go away with a reset? If so then I wouldn't be too concerned unless it comes back. With most of the emissions stuff I've always found that driving my wife's car usually helps to clear it out. She isn't the most spirited of driver. Usually shifting around 3k. A nice 6k drive for a bit seems to help clean out the system of build ups. At the very least it is a good excuse for doing it.:icon_wink: Since she does a lot of short drives, that could be a contributing factor as the engine never heats up to burn off the water and other deposits which form in the exhaust.

Yea it did come back after a reset, but im not 2 worried about it. Thanks for all the replies.
Your help is much appreciated.

Since it did come back on after the reset, yes I would be replacing it ASAP as an 02 sensor (or wiring issue to the 02 sensor is much cheaper than a Cat.

Fordsvtmfl 11-27-2010 04:10 PM

I figure that if it starts to run rich (or lean) that one of the other 02's would throw a rich/lean code. also it takes quite a long time of running rich/lean (moderately of course) to damage the cats permanently. either way it will probably be going to the shop in the next couple of weeks.

you need a new 02 sensor. The heater is responsible for faster response on cold starts. Other than that the )2 functiions normally. No like themo said, it wont cause driveabilty or rough running. Only check engine light for bad heater in the 02

Thanks for all the replies, the car was going to go to the shop on friday...but unfortunately she (my girlfriend) was in an accident last night :( everyone is ok but it still kinda sucks. I'm pretty sure the only damage done to the jag was the hood/headlights/front bumper/radiator. Beyond that everything still looked good. Ill post pics when it gets fixed.

blaydes99 12-05-2010 12:48 AM

Glad everyone is ok but .. uh, *ahem*, perhaps don't let the jag out of your sight anymore? :D

Glad to hear no one hurt , bet its the O2 sensor too , they are considered a service item , mine used to come on in the rain .

Mike.
