Conflicting advice on euro 3 or euro 4

My 2005 2.2d se has an electronic turbo actuator, and also has a vacuum piped egr valve with 3 wire height sensor.

I have been unable to define if my engine is euro 3 or euro 4.

I have had conflicting information on this, and cannot get a clear answer.

My understanding is the euro 3 can be egr blanked without eml problems, whilst euro 4 cannot.

Whilst euro 4 always has electronic turbo actuator, is it still euro 4 with vacuum egr with height sensor ?

Thanks,
Paul.

Euro 3 or 4, differences?

Hi Dell,
Thanks for the info.
So my 2005 2.2d with vacuum egr (with height sensor), is Euro 4.

Other info implies that the motor driven egr makes it euro 4.
A parts supplier shows the motor egr starts from a vin number just a bit higher than mine.

Thanks,
Paul.

The main thing is it's illegal to do things such as blank or disable an EGR.

Hi JagV8,
Do you have a link where I can see why it is illegal to blank the egr here in the UK?

Thanks,
Paul.

Under EU and UK laws it is illegal to tamper with/defeat/etc any emissions-related stuff as you can read in the various laws. There is also advice on various gov.uk sites. google is your friend here. By way of example, but there are many more, Regulation 61A of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.

Note it is a criminal matter, not civil.

Potentially invalidates your insurance - especially if you fail to tell your insurer of any mod like that!

That's interesting, I will look in to that.

This evening I have just replaced engine oil and filter, and air filter, also replaced a slow leak on the thermostat housing seal.

Whilst doing this work, upon removing the engine cover i have just noticed that 2 wires of the egr lift sensor are cut through, this is where the wiring loom splits on the cam cover !
So someone has done some work here previously, i have done approx 100+ miles since owning it, and the eml has stayed off, looks like the ecu could have been re programmed to ignore the egr ?

When i bought the car a few weeks ago, i did notice slight increase in diesel knock when the car was cruising on part throttle, this seems to be classic trait of no egr circulation.

I have since filled the tank and added a bottle of Archoil ar6400d max treatment, to decoke the engine/turbo.
Now I have noticed that the part throttle knock has stopped, i assume this is due to the cetane boost that the additive has, as the full decoke will take longer.

The engine does run well, with no flat spots of hesitation.

Bit of a horror story, as the UK's dire air quality means sooner or later real testing of diesel cars emissions looks inevitable.
