Constant ticking/clicking noise from instrument cluster?
 

I've had a look but found nothing about this so I was wondering if anyone has a clue as to what it is. I've started hearing a constant clicking/ticking noise from my speedo/rev counter cluster. It's the same noise that you get when you turn the engine off and hear the clocks "whiring down" like a jet engine or when they self level when you first turn the ignition on. It's started happening constantly while driving. It's not really bothering me because I usually have music on but I was just wondering if it was going to be a problem any time soon? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I noticed one thing the noise is coming from the shifter. It 'clicks' and 'pops' there instead. I noticed it has done that since day one.

The ticking/clicking noise coming the isntrument cluster (if it's the same noise I'm thinking of) is the sound of the guage needles. Generally when your driving and the engine upshifts, the tach. guage needle makes a ticking/clicking noise as it "falls." To check if it's that noise, you can start the engine, leave it in park and rev the engine. If it makes the same noise your talking about when needles "fall," than that's what it is. Accoding to the Jag dealer (Desert European Motorcars - Rancho Mirage, CA - GREAT dealer!) this is normal and happens any time the needles "fall." (Sorry, I can't think of any better term to describe it)

The clicking noise coming from the shifter is the brake-shift interlock system. It clicks any time the press/release the brake while the transmission is in park. This is normal for almost any automatic. Every car I've even driven has done this (although some were notably louder than others). However, some X-Types, paticularly the 2002-2003 models have a fault that it clicks any time you press the brake and/or when the car shifts into and out of first gear. This is not normal and HIGHLY annoying...I've had the same problem with my 2006 Acura TSX. It was eventually fixed by the dealer, although I'm not quite sure what was done.

The only way that winding down noise can be rectified that I know of is to replace the instrument pack assy. It is an annoying little noise, and quite common. People usually tend to quit complaining about it when their warranty expires.......how funny.

This shift interlock clicking is NOT normal, and the only way to fix that is to replace the entire shifter. The clicking should cease when the shifter is removed from Park. There is protocol to inhibit interlock operation when the shifter is not in Park. Another one of those complaints people can suddenly live with when their warranty expires.

PoBoy - Are you saying that the clicking is NOT normal in any situation or just when it's not in park? When I drove an '02 X-Type, every tech I spoke with said it was normal when it was in park. I never had the problem when the shifter was outside of park. On top of that, the shifter had been replaced 2 or 3 times (that I can remember) due to other problems, yet the clicking noise never went away. Is that normal? Just asking for some clarification. Only when in P should the click be heard. I may have misunderstood as well. Sorry. If it clicks out of P, it is not working properly. Clicking shifters when out of P is common.....so be ready.

Yeah, i thought it was a problem but my dads ford does it too not that loud though, i kinda like the feature, reminds you your foot is on the brake read to leave. I have a whirring niose comeing from my instrument pannel, but then again it is time to service it, ill get around to it eventually.

My 02 X-type has clicks in the shifter as well whenever I apply the brakes. It does it most of the time, but not always. I never really thought much about it because the Ford Escort we used to have did that, too, sometimes.

Mines a manual and its been doing it while driving. It is the same noise as you guys are getting when in park but constant. Anyway, it annoyed me for a week and then it stopped doing it. Just hope it does'nt come back!

Mine is the same as l17led's, its a manual, and the only was i can describe the noise is by saying it sounds like the 'second hand' from a clock, but with no paticular ryhthm. Does it while im driving along, end up payin more attention to trying to find were the noise is coming from, than watching the road lol. Can anyone shed any light on this problem ??? thanks, Mike.

Not trying to be a one-chord charlie between this thread and the disabled XJR thread from FL, but doesn't this statement concern anyone else? "First, It had the coolant hoses giving way and resulting the car stalling." Sounds overly hot to me, if it stalled.

Later, OP observes "hoses gave way again with engine overheated." Could just be sentence construction, but this could be interpreted as the engine overheated, causing the hose(s) to blow. Normally, the other way 'round.

I think a compression check of all 6 cyl's may be in order before diving into myriad causes of cold-fueling, though I grant since hoses were changed, the T-stat is a logical check. Just concerned there may be greater damage than assumed due to heat....
