I have a 2003 x type and the cruise control does not work. The dash light comes up but dose not lock in. Anyone else have this issue? Any help would be great.

Thanks .

Dr Dome, it sounds like to me that the button on the steering column is toast and that is not sending the signal to the ECU to engage the cruise control. Let me get home and look at the diagrams just to confirm.

I did change the steering wheel out. It now has one from a 2004.

DR Dome, that is probably the source of your problem. IN short what happens is when you push a button on the steering wheel, it generates a voltage relative to the button that is depressed. This specific voltage is related to the desired action by the computer. If this voltage is not right, the computer will either try to perform a different action or will not be sure what action is requested and not do anything.

So is there a fix? Or is it a loss for the better wheel?

Thermo 05-14-2013 02:18 PM

Dr Dome, let me look at the diagrams and lets see if there is something that can be done.

Dr Dome, well, looking at the diagrams, for your situation, there can only be 1 problem to cause what you are seeing unless it is merely coincidence. The "SET" button on the new steering wheel is toast. With that being said, you should be able to pull the buttons off of the old steering wheel and transfer them in to the new steering wheel and be golden.

What I was suspecting could be the cause is not the case. All the resistors are the same between the two steering wheels and if your other controls are working (ie, ON, RESUME, etc), then the resistor network in question has to be good. So, you have a fix, question is whether you want to get into the steering wheel again to do the work necessary to fix the problem.

Thanks Thermo. I will order one up off eBay. It's not much work to take the wheel apart. I will let you know if it works.

Harpreet, you are in the X-Type forum. Ask your question in the appropriate XJ forum and most likely get an answer.

My cruise works, but only if I click the 'on' button behind the wheel, then press the resume button. Odd, but I'm used to it now.

I replaced the steering wheel on my X-type. My original steering wheel didnt have an on-off button, but the new one has. The cruise control buttons didnt work right on the new wheel. The on-off button worked more or less ok, but the cruise control didnt lock in. Only button that worked was the "resume" button, but it gave a "cruise cancled" message instead. I just took the old buttons from the old steering wheel and attached it to the new wheel and problem solved. The car just didnt know what to do with the extra on-off button :D Might help someone who is battling the same problem.

Hi Jag friends. I would like advice please before I take it to a independent specialist locally. The X type 2002 2.0 Cruise control selects on and off on the steering wheel switch via the Digital message in the speedo gauge, but even after selecting set + or _ 30mph it will not hold the revs and the speed drops off. Is this a steering button issue or will I need a new Cruise control ECU and cable assembly or is it a Fuse issue.? I have a 680 return trip in September to Scotland and would like it to work.
Could this be also a need to replace the switch buttons on the steering wheel?

emerald green what did your issue turn out to be?
