Diff oil change.. done...

here we go again. Lifetime fill eh?
I just undid the plug (fill plug, there is only one)on the rear diff and stuck a hose in and have started to siphon it out. Kinda cold in the garage, so it may take a while , but in the meantime here are some pics of the plug, look at the metallic sludge on it. 3rd pic is wiped clean.

How much lube did you get out?..was it full or barely any in it like the Transfercase?

RE: Diff oil change.. plug is out - ugly

the oil is still draining, been almost an hour, but still coming out.
Supposed to be 1.2 litres in there. If I get out anywhere near a litre I will just refill it.
The oil coming out is not bad, a little dark but not like the TC.
Overall some peace of mind that the diff is OK.

Gotta just rig up a way to get the oil back in later on today...http://www3.sympatico.ca/bruceh1/diff4.jpg

Your Wife will be happy to know that you have put her best china to good use!
Thanks for the pics. Always good info!

There is a hand held suction pump sold at auto parts stores. After you suck the oil out I clean the pump and fill with new oil and pump it in.
Forgot to ad... How many miles on that oil?

Hellooooo rust! Cheap or not cheap you need to throw out about $40 on two cans of underbody spray or you'll be doing the fred flintstone thing soon.

http://www3.sympatico.ca/bruceh1/filldiff.jpgthe under body is amazingly perfect for rust.. the parts you see are the rear subrame and the suspension arms. I dont think it is so bad. If you dont live in a seriously wintery place. then you wont understand what can happen to a car here.

here are pics of me filling oil.. and some underbody pics. note how good the underbody is and the brake lines etc.. also note my wonderful rocker panels.

Summary for quantity of oil

I bought 1.85 litres of oil for the transfer case and rear diff.

I measured 0.6 litres for the transfer case.
that leaves 1.25 left over for the diff.

The JTIS says the rear diff holds 1.2 litres.
I siphoned out 0.75 of fluid.... ( not knowing if I got it all )

I have poured in all the rest of the oil so for sure 1.2 went in and it is not up to the level of the fill plug.

that means two thing.
1) my siphoning got most of the oil out
2) the level was low before I started, over half a litre was missing.

Overall this was much easier than I imagined. just used some clear tubing that was kicking around.

I am pleased that it is done.

Nice write-up Bo! Thank you! Itoo look forward to changing out my T-case and Differentialoil here soon. I willbe using one of these:
http://djvmerchandise.com/pro1133108.html

It really made it nice when doing transaxle fluid changes on my 944.And the Jag looks to a tad more of a challenge.

Same conclusion..

I did my Differential today also..Suckedout about .75 Liters and put back in 1.2L and none came out the fill hole when it was back level...Oh well at least I'm sure there is more oil in there now than before..

I used Royal Purple again here..the Sites and stuff I've researched, all say it is better than the Ford spec'd M2C192-A, which from what I gather, does not contain the Limited Slip additive..so that's basically the difference..

RE: Diff oil change.. plug is out - ugly

I contacted Royal Purple Inc..and this was their reply...so I'm good to go.
