Drivetrain vibration and noise

I have an 05 X-type 2.5 manual transmission w/234,000 miles.
I've had a vibration at around 45mph-70mph for some time. I have inspected the drive-shaft, center carrier bearing, and universal joint several times and all seem solid and no play. I have greased the center carrier bearing as instructed on a post here. I have also changed the transmission fluid.

With the car lifted and off of all 4 wheels, engine running and in gear, I am getting lots of harmonic noise (almost sounds like a dry bearing would sound) from the rear of the transmission where the drive-shaft connects to it. With engine off and in neutral I can get a little play when I rotate the drive-shaft back and forth by hand. Note...it is very little play.

Any Ideas out there on what my vibration and noise would be?

Sounds like it may be the bearings in the transfer case. Lot's of good posts here on how to fix it without taking the entire case out of the car.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

If you find you need to remove the back of you transfer case to get to the bearings, had to change mine last year. you will find a plate that is over two of the bolts. not recommending but what i did as it is a pain to remove the plate is to cut the bolts flush with the plate and bend the plate slightly so you can a socket in to remove the bolts. when you put it all back together after changing the bearings drill out the thread of some nuts to use as a spacers .

Here are the part numbers of the bearings inside my transfer case. Hope this helps.

2 NTN part number HM88510 Race
1 NTN part number HM88542 bearing
1 NTN Part number HM88547 bearing

when you install the bearings pre load them with the nut on the shaft turn the case while tightening the bolt when you feel it grip back off 1/2 turn then seal the end with silicone sealant also had to get a new oil seal $30 from jaguar dealer

hopefully you have access to a shop press and some bearing pullers i got my puller from harbor freight item #93980

Paul....what year was yours and was it a manual like mine?

David,
I have an 2006 3.0 Auto.
I checked the workshop manual which I highly recommend you download if you have not already. The transfer case is the same for the Auto and the Manual transmission.
