hi all my external temp sensor is reading wrong when i first start up it seems to be right but after a short while it reads about 10 degrees to high anybody got any help:)

Didscussed many times as a common fault
It will be the ext temp sensor behind the front bumper
Here is where its at
Attachment 179144

thanks for that will replace

Brutal 03-30-2010 01:22 PM

Its not bad, it is a calculated value, there is a whole engineering explanation as to the reading. It will not give you a reading like a thermometer would. You can change it, but its wont fix whats not broken

gjardar 04-06-2010 04:58 AM

Do you have any suggestions what to do?

Brutal 04-06-2010 07:51 AM

Nothing its normal

wannesd 04-06-2010 08:16 AM

??? eh ???

Hate to point out the obvious, but it's hardly normal if your temp readings suddenly decide to be off by 10 degrees.

Anyways, if someone has a part number for the sensor, I'll replace mine too, as it reads 10 degrees too low since last week. :icon_doh:

Brutal 04-06-2010 08:44 AM

Ok im not gonna argue with you....this very thing has been beat to death at jaguar and there was a email, tsb whatever that came out way back when to address this very thing....buy a new 1, youll feel better i promise

wannesd 04-06-2010 10:04 AM

I'm not saying that you're mistaking. I'm sure you're telling us the truth.
I'm just not all that keen on what jaguar considers "normal".

If they find it normal that a temp sensor is off by 10 degrees, why bother having one at all?
They could've just used a dial that said "hot, normal, cold" instead :icon_wink:

Anyway, if you're sure about it not being the temp sensor, than what could it be caused by? It's quite annoying that the weather's quite nice over here, but my ext temp reads 3 degrees, and the snowflake lights up.

Even though jaguar might consider this normal, I don't. I find this evenly normal as never changing transmission-, transfercase- and differential-oil.

there is a bulletin for THAT issue, tsb S412-04, but believe me I have had a Jagaur engineer explain how and why the ext temp reading is calculated and the effects on it....yeah okay and why didnt you just take a NORMAL reading and leave it alone...But I understand their thinking cause you do have to deal with radiant heat and cold from road surface, radiator/condensor etc...

True, if they took a normal reading, it would be way too high, because of the residue heat of the radiator...
would love to see the link you sent, but it needs a login and pwd. I'm guessing my GTR pwd won't work... (edit: nope, it doesn't)

So this got me thinking.
The calculated temp would always have to be lower than the temp it reads (due to the rad heat). So the further you move the sensor away from the rad, the lower it would read, and the lower calc'ed temp would be. Maybe my sensor has just worked loose?

I'm off to check this §H!T out :icon_teeth:

Brutal 04-06-2010 12:28 PM

Well the short of it is that it applied specificly to stype r's, but is relative to other models. And it involves moving ambient temp sensor away further out from radiator.
Claimed error in reading is up to 10 degree error
i can still tell you that the ambient is not always a accurate reading. I have shot and probed the temp compared to display reading and is always off. Thats why i said its not broken, you will drive yourself nutz expecting it to be accurate all the time

What are these so I can read this?

Brutal 04-06-2010 10:35 PM

sorry I can see automaticly from the link, didnt think it would be an issue for a cut n P

:icon_eek:oooh it looks like ive stirred something up here so do i change it or leave it:icon_confused:

I had the same problem. I ordered a new Ambient Temperature Sensor from Jaguar ($10.41). You can also get it from Amazon.com for about $8.00. It took me about 10 minutes to replace. It's fairly easy.
