First time posting and a first time problem!!
 

Hello forum. This is my first time posting here on jaguar forums! I have just recently purchased my first jaguar. Its a 2003 x-type with 51,000 miles on her. I recently have been feeling a little strange on how the car is shifting into its last gear. It sort of feels as if there a very miniscule surge when shifting and the rpms sort of flutter almost as if theres a small transmission slip. Does this sound like my trannys going or could it be something else? Anyone else experience this problem? Thanks forum!!!

That's it? Oh boy are you in for a surprise.[sm=joke.gif] The weakest point of the X is the tranny. You'll hear complaints about whinning noises and hard shifts into reverse or drive. The best thing that you can do to the car right now is change the tranny fluid, as Jaguar Co. thinks that for some reason tranny fluid never needs to be changed...BULLSPIT! Your tranny has now 51K miles on a dirty filter and dirty fluid. I think it could hold up for another 20K to 25K miles but if you change it now, nothing bad will come of it. I do tranny fluid changes once a year, but that's just me!;)[sm=signs003.gif]

Ok sounds like i have to to the transmission fluid change. Can I have that done some where other then jaguar, like a goodyear or a firestone? I called and there's a $100 difference between the dealer and firestone. Thanks

03 with 50K miles and you don't have warranty, orr does the warranty not cover this? Either way, a tranny fluid change is like $300-$400 at the dealer I think, so a 100 dollar discount is a lot better, but ask them how much they'll charge if you take your own oil. They'll use the cheapest crap on your car, so you don't want that either. $200 for the fluid change MAX. Don't pay any more than that, and make sure they change the filter too!

well fire stone said it would be 109 for a tranny flush. What do you mean bring my own oil? What kind do you recommend and how much should I buy? Thanks

from the jag service manual for an 03 automatic.. I dont see a filter reference ... ill post more ifI find it.
so there should be 8 litres of fluid take out and replaced.... I dont know why they are saying FLUSH??? that makes no sense.. it is simple drain and refil.



Transmission Fluid Drain and RefillDrainRaise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to .Place a suitable container under the transmission drain plug. If an integral problem is suspected, drain the transmission fluid through a paper filter. A small amount of metal or friction particles may be found from normal wear. However, if excessive metal and friction particles are present, internal examination may be required.Remove the transmission drain plug. Install the transmission drain plug.Tighten to 45 Nm.RefillLower the vehicle. Remove the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe cap.Use automatic transmission fluid WSS-M2C922-A1 or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification.Fill the automatic transmission with 8 litres of automatic transmission fluid through the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe.

Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to .Connect the Jaguar Approved Diagnostic System.Make sure J-Gate shift selector is in the Park position (P).With the engine running and the foot brake applied, move the J-Gate shift selector through 'P-R-N-D-4-3-2' and back to the 'P' position to circulate the automatic transmission fluid until the temperature reaches 30 to 40°C (86 to 104°F) on the Jaguar Approved Diagnostic System.When the automatic transmission fluid temperature reaches 35°C (95°F) check that the selector lever is in the 'P' position raise the vehicle. With the engine running, remove the automatic transmission fluid level tube plug.Remove and discard the level plug and sealing washer. Use automatic transmission fluid WSS-M2C922-A1 or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification.If the automatic transmission fluid does not come out of the transmission fluid level tube the automatic transmission fluid level is insufficient. If this is the case add the automatic transmission fluid in 0.5 litre units into the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe until the automatic transmission fluid comes out of the automatic transmission fluid level tube.Remove the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe cap.Make sure the automatic transmission fluid temperature does not exceed 40°C (104°F). If the automatic transmission fluid temperature does exceed 40°C (104°F) stop the automatic transmission fluid level check and allow the automatic transmission fluid to cool until the temperature reaches 30 to 40°C (86 to 104°F).Allow the automatic transmission fluid to come out of the automatic transmission fluid level tube until the overflow stops at a temperature of no more than 40°C (104°F).If when the automatic transmission fluid level plug is first removed and automatic transmission fluid comes out of the automatic transmission fluid level tube, allow the automatic transmission fluid to come out of the automatic transmission fluid level tube until the overflow stops at a temperature of no more than 40°C (104°F). Install the transmission fluid level plug.Install a new level plug and sealing washer.Tighten to 15 Nm. Install the automatic transmission fluid charging pipe cap.Lower the vehicle.Disconnect the Jaguar Approved Diagnostic System.

There is an oil strainer shown on the exploded view. I think this may be reuseable if it looks dirty, but I dont think that I would drop the oil pan just for this. I would do a fluid change and see how it drives afterwards.

I wouldn't be able to follow along with the instructions since I don't have an X, but I've heard that the process is empty and refill empty and refill empty and refill...several times, but I'm sure a shop would do it more conveniently. The fluid to use I believe is Mobil ATF 320!

Just in case you're wondering, the fluid that Jag uses is 30 bucks a bottle!

That is the best thing you could do! Right before the warranty runs out, it "mysteriously" runs out of fluid...LOL, jus kidding. That's dishonest, but after your warranty runs out, if you want to change the tranny fluid, you can use Mobil ATF 320 which is extremely difficult to find here in the US! You want to flush the fluid in the lines & transcooler.

You dont want to mix you new (expensive) fluid with a quart or so of dirty fluid.
