James, because of the scope of work that you are doing, having a torque wrench is going to be recommended. Items like the lower A-arm bolts are supposed to be torqued to a specific value. Can you get away with tightening them with a standard wrench? I am sure you can. But, there are reasons for the torques. This is where I would tell you to look back on the main page for the X-Type and there is a link at the top of the page (in the first few posts) that will have a link to the service manual for the car. This will give you all the torque values that you will need. It will also tell you how to do the work almost down to the bolt.

The other thing that I would be looking into is whether you need to support the engine as you pull the sub frame. The motor is supported from mounts near the top of the engine, but I am not 100% sure if there are some on the under side too. While I am sure the upper mounts would prevent the motor from dropping out the bottom of the car as the subframe is removed, you could be applying too much strain to the mounts and damaging them too, leading to future noises and whatnot.

A lot of members have done what you are looking to do. So, it is a "backyard mechanic job" that should be within your abilities. I would say to start a day or two ahead of time applying a penetrant fluid to all the bolts that you can reach to make disassembly easier once you get under. Specifically, you want to hit the bolts near the back of the subframe where it bolts into the body of the car. This bolt has been a pain for a lot of people and can give you a lot of grief.

 

Yeah, love that fraking sub frame bolt that is supposed to be "captive" that breaks free inside the chassis. Found after I cut out the body another way to access it, smfh =

Basically, the transfer case needs to be removed for clearance!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The oil pan can be replaced WITHOUT removing the subframe if a few 'short-cuts' are employed. Plenty of info if that is all you are trying to do.
If you truly need the subframe removed then carry on with the major removal.
