Glow Plugs ?

Just to show my complete ignorance with diesels.

What happened to the glow plug starting regime? Am I right in thinking that they don't exist if so how or what happens on a cold start.

I have a good understanding of petrol engines having owned and rebuilt several but the oilers are a bit of an unknown.

I don't have any problems with starting but being a curious chap all knowledge is worth having.

Richmond, on smaller engines, the need for glow plugs may not be required as they can obtain the needed starting heat with a few compressions of the cylinder. So, the need for the glow plugs is not there. With the bigger engines (and lots of steel to absorb heat), generating the heat by rolling the engine would take too much time to make it effective.

AFAIK, all X-type diesels have glow plugs. Page 113 of your owners manual gives complete starting instructions.
