Headliner worry.
Hi I read of headliners coming loose.
Is this an age thing on the Xtype? or does it only apply to certain cars? In all my motoring life and many many cars I have never suffered this trouble. I buy possibly the best car I have ever had and read I am in danger of the roof lining "as we call it" failing. Talk to me please! |
DUNKS, I think part of it depends on how hot it gets near you in the summer and if you let the car sit outside all the time. In short, the headliner is glued to a backing board. if the glue dries out, then it will not hold the fabric in place and therefore it falls. Even when a glue is "dry" to the touch, the inside of it is still gooey to a degree. That is what causes it to hold things together. When it dries all the way through, then it looses its ability to hold. The hotter you get the glue, the more drying that it does. Keep the interior of the car cooler, the headliner will last longer.
Since you are in England where the summers do not get extremely hot, you should be just fine. If you lived in say Arizona, USA, well, you might have a different situation. |
Thank you for that. As I do live in the UK and the car has been here all it's life I feel Quite safe. We did have a warm summer once, I just cant remember when.

Concur that much seems to depend on where the car spends its summers...something that spends its life in the UK, where the car was designed and built, is far less to have the failings we see, for example, here in Texas. Both of my X-Types as well as the XK8 got new headliners around the same time. The adhesives just are not compatible with 100-plus degree days across the summers of the life of the vehicle...
But if/when yours decides to give way, it won't just go *whoomp* and be around your forehead and eyes. It is a gradual process of failing...which certainly affords time to determine who will do the repair and at what cost. None of mine were unreasonable. As I recall, the cash price was around $350 or $400...I had a thread in the regional forum that praised the shop that did the work back in 2013 or so. |
Oh joy, another thing to watch for and expect in the 100°+ Utah summers. Smfh!

Head Liner
Mine went out after 14 years. I found a great place "stateside" and it cost $450.00 U.S. D. and that did not include the liner on the sunroof shade.

I pulled my headliner myself and took it to a shop. They put on new material for $175. Took a few hours, but for me, it was a learning experience and it got me into parts of the car that I was curious about.

On the older cars its as much the glue that fails as well as the foam backing, this deteriorates over time and stops holding hands. Had this on my ‘92 XJ40, common problem and I am in NZ, temperate climate, not too hot, not too cold.

It not the glue that dried out make the head line sage, but the foam backing of fabric the deteriorated, it's broken off from the fabric and become like powder so fabric won't hold on to the glue on backing board, I wish the glue was dried so we can scrape it off the backing board easier, unfortunate it still sticky make clean it off backing board so hard.

I couldn't figure out how to delete my post. Moderator feel free to delete. Hello X-Type fans, Curious how hard it is to get the headliner out of the car? Not talking about detaching from the top but physically getting it in or out of the car. My local body shop suggest it would require removing the front or rear window to replace the headliner. Anyone on this forum able to remove and install without taking out glass or a door? Also, where did you get your new headliner? For those worried about the future of their headliner, I would suggest tinting your windows! Is likely cheaper than a new headliner. My Jag is typically parked nose-in in my driveway, so the back of the car gets afternoon sun. I suspect a rear tinted window would have kept the headliner is coming down from the back. Also, had similar issue with my son's car that is parked similarly. Thanks! |
