High speed whistling noise, intermittent

Hi, my 2002 X-type (2.5 SE) is making an intermittent whistling noise at high speeds (above 75 km/h). The whistling noise is low pitch and doesn't happen all the time. It makes the noise while accelerating, braking or even coasting while at that speed and gets louder the faster the car is moving. It sounds like its coming from below the hand brake area (but I can't be sure).

It doesn't matter if the road is bumpy or smooth. I did notice that it tends to occur more during straights rather than bends.

After doing some reading here, it may be the prop shaft, but from what I understand that only happens on colder temperatures. The coldest it has been here was 10C, so not that cold, and the whistling noise still occurs even when the car is warm, so it may not be that. Does anyone have any idea?

Verglace, it may be possible that you went through a water puddle and a strong stream of water hit the area where the e-brake cable leaves the passenger cabin and what you are hearing is a whistling from the seal not sealing properly. You could need to get into the center console and then follow the cable back to see where it pops through the metal body of the car. If you can get under the car, that may be easier to get a view of, but not everyone has this ability. From there, if it is the seal, you simply push the seal back into place and your noise should go away.

Thermo's got a lot more info than I but check...

I had an annoying whistle too that grew louder as I went up in speed, especially above 70mph. I replaced the left and right black plastic windshield trims on the exterior- it solved the problem for me. But Thermo has a lot more experience with the X's than I will ever have and so I'd look there first.

Thanks for the information. My windshield trims look to be in perfect condition so it hopefully is thermo's suggestion. It has been raining so its very possible that it is exactly just that. I'm quite new at cars, so I'm not exactly sure how I would check that seal, however I will do my research and hopefully I can find it.
