That is excellent! How about if every customer who patronizes these businesses asks them to participate in this forum. Then we can all benefit from their hundreds of years of combined expertise, and have them subject their pricing structure to some public scrutiny and competition.

This can be taken as far as you guys want. The forum can give them space in the galleries to post a limited number of their products with the web site watermarked into the pics. This would give them advertising. Maybe they could then offer a small discount to forum members. Customers would post reviews for all to see and this would provide valuable feedback they can use to improve their service/products.
And as these businesses have a lot of combined expertise so do the members of this forum. Members could suggest improvements to existing products and bring up new ones.
I talked to an Ebay seller of clear side marker lenses and asked if anyone made clear 3rd brake lights. He had never thought of it and will check on the ability to make a mold. I told him if he produced it I would get the word out to this forum. I'm sure many of you have had ideas for products that you may not want or have the ability to develop yourself but would like to see on the market.
I have placed ordrs from Adamesh and Mina. Once I have installed their products I will review it here. Hopefully with pics of the install and I will suggest to those 2 companies that they start a membership here. I know some have, I saw Borla here before.
So you are right, this could help us all if we can get everyone involved.

I'm left to wonder exactly what point you were making in the first place, since every vendor on your list already appears on the one Jim saw fit to post.

Now we'll take a little look without your (clear) lense of idealism in the way:

For two years, on a total of four different forums, I have read posters talking about lowering springs for XJ6/XJ8/XK variants. A significant number of them who decided to purchase and install aftermarket springs have reported a variety of problems as a result.

Among the reported symptoms were inaccurate final ride height results and the inability to reset camber angles within an acceptable range to prevent excessive tire wear. One particular XJ owner bought expensive springs and paid for their fitment, only to find that his final ride height had not markedly changed. Another was told that his front suspension crossmember would require fabrication of new lower wishbone mounting points to compensate for the resultant negative camber. The guys left to solve the problems were the installers. The vendors merely sold them.

Low and behold, one of the vendors on your list made a cameo public appearance to pitch their suspension products. I immediately posted a response, pointing out inaccuracies in their information about sway bars and asking them about the "hit or miss" road spring applications. Wanna guess if they came back with a response?

I'm not an engineer, but I could do alot better at insuring suitability. Correct length and rate calculations result in a reasonably predictable final result. The camber change will be similarly consistant. So you fit springs to a test chassis, insure that camber changes can be corrected, and include whatever shims, offset mounting bolts or bushings that will be required by the end user for a satisfactory result. Or you just take orders, and hope your brand name gets passed around enough in public to sell you more springs.

No sour grapes, just facts. Another vendor on your list quoted an XJ40 owner $650.00 for a used rear hub carrier assembly. True, the fitment range is a narrow one and the supply is scarce: but for crying out loud, the car probably isn't worth three times that figure. I quoted him $250.00, with new bearings installed, and would have been happy to make the sale at a fair price for both of us. That company doesn't show up to publicly post advice to owners either. None of them do.

Since this thread will be one of the few that is easy to find to for future reference, I'll be glad to come back and laud any of the afforementioned companies for their public contributions. I come here to learn too, and most of what I read is inaccurate word of mouth. I always expected to read more from qualified professionals who weren't afraid to discuss their products and services in public. I don't think they have the grapes for it.

If you read the above you'll notice that the botom half of Jim's list was extracted fom mine. And I thought my point was (clear) enough. There is good information on all sides. I was not pushing any particular vendor just trying to help show what's out there. We all take our chances at buying something new. That's why I will post reviews of the products I install so that others can benefit from my successes and failures. If we get the input from both the vendors and installers hopefully we will have the complete picture.

There is no indication on Jim's February post that it was edited.

These vendors aren't any more interested in subsidising group buys than they are in competing on price points. The pictures will remain incomplete due to the lack of product knowledge, or the willingness to remove the lense and engage in public discussion of any perceived intellectual property. Good luck with the throw-star brake rotors.

The one vendor I approached so far (Racing Green Cars) has offered a 10% discount. I am a member at SCCOA.COM this is a Thunderbird Supercoupe forum. They have a whole group buy section and it has been very successful. I have participated several times and the members have saved money. The vendors are not subsidizing anything. They get to sell more products with a lower margin but overall the dollars are higher for them. It's the same principal that applies to volume discounts at superstores. Both the vendor and the buyer benefit.
The lack of product knowledge will be diminished when more people buy, try and report their experiences on this forum for the benefit of the other members.
I might never have known of or purchased the Mina exhaust I just received today (review pending install) had I not seen it reviewed here. What I took from what I read was that while this exhaust is pricey it looks and performs well. But I would rather have the chance to try for myself than never know about it because a few members don't like it and want to suppress it. The sites I posted above I have not purchased from. I simply want other members to have more choices. It’s always "buyer beware" but if you want something new sometimes you have to take a chance.
The "throw-star" rotors are another example of something I saw and decided to share. I believe in people deciding for their self rather than dictating what they should or should not do or buy.

Timing Chains and chains tensioners & the tools rental
 

I highly recommend Christophers Foreign cars in Ocean City NJ for renting timing alignment tool set kit and purchasing the authentic Jaguar parts included in a complete timing chain kit. They shipped the tools and kit the same day I placed the order (shipping included in the price, no sales tax, you only have to pay return shipping for the rental tools). You get 3 weeks use of the tools for $75. Water pump was $74.25.

ZF Transmission rebuilder
 

I had our 2001 XJ8 transmission rebuilt last week at the only ZF factory authorized ZF transmission specialists in Connecticut. Our transmission failed at 91800 miles. They found a bad freewheel, a internally cracked valve body housing (HSG3) and they changed the valve body main pressure regulator housing, the sprag, installed the new design forward drum, they remanufactured the exist torque convertor, filled transmission with ZF transmission fluid, then tested the transmission on a Dyno.
Their retail price for the rebuild is $3450.00, but I was able to get it at wholesale price of $2295.00.

Wheel Repair Shop
 

Let me note that I have no financial interest in any of the businesses that I recommend on this thread. I am only trying to let other car owners my experiences with these businesses.

We have used Cliff Jacobs Wheel Repair 2 times now with excellent results.

The edge of the spare tire rim had a 2 inch section missing when we bought our 2001 XJ8. Cliff welded in a patch. The total cost was $99 ($85 for repair & $14 Fedex).

The second time I hit the street curb and bent the front rim. The repair cost was $100 plus the shipping cost.

Both of these rims look fine after the repairs.
