Just Purchased my New 2002 X-Type!
 

Hey All,

So newbie here who's just become the proud owner of a 2002 X-Type 5sp. Black with Light Dove Gray Interior. Super excited about the car and got it for a great price to boot! Really happy to have some with a little class and sporty as well! After perusing the site quietly for a while I've decided to post the good news and to try and field advice on any pointers and tips you vets may have regarding the car. I definitely know that as far as maintenance goes, the Transfer case oil, engine oil, spark plugs and air filter are all in order for starters. Any thing else I should be aware of as an owner of this vehicle? Looking forward to this community and lots of support! Attached are pictures so feedback welcomed!

Congrats on the purchase! Love that it's a manual, too!

You're lucky that you're in a warm climate. The passenger side door well is really prone to rust as water/salt gets trapped at the bottom of the door. Mine is just rotting away :(

That is just about the mileage that I bought mine at. I did the transmission, transfer case, differential drain and fill and have been good to go. I did set a code by not turning the gas cap three clicks. At a little over 100,000 I think a new set of spark plugs is in order next. I think the front strut bearings are due a replacing also. I can hear slight taps on slow bumps. It is a ten year old vehicle, some things wear out.

Nice. Mines also black on black with the same color interior. I have tinted windows. I changed out the rotors and pads for slotted rotors and ceramic pads. I had to have my oil pan gasket changed out. That's not a cheap job as you have to remove the transfer case to get at it. I also installed the ACM so I can play my iPod through the radio.
Nice car. I'm jealous that you have the 5 speed. Mines an auto.

Just a couple of small hints.

Ensure you have at least two keys.

Do the emergency boot release modification.
Quick and easy to do. Cost may be zero, at worse 50c.

Congrats on the car, when I got mine last year. I replaced all fluids and filters an got a new set of tires. It's a real fun car to drive, good luck with it.

Also the clear side lights look good on a black car. Available on eBay for around $50 a pair.

Thanks for all of the responses. Why are two keys so important? I've seen it referenced a couple of times elsewhere...

In the US I understand the normal issue is two keys, the normal four button flip key and a simple concierge (green) key).

In the UK the normal issue is two four button flip keys.

There is a risk of locking your only key in the trunk (boot).
With your X type locked you can open the just the boot with the flip key button. If you are then distracted, leave the key in the trunk and slam the lid down.......HELP!
One solution is to break a rear light unit etc....

From what I read it is not so easy to get a second key and can be very expensive due to re programming etc.

Obviously it is an advantage to have a spare key but with an X type it has other benefits.
If you have two keys that will start the engine then you can programme any additional keys without visiting a locksmith or Jaguar dealer.

I would like to chime in on the key issue. I needed a new key due to the original had worn some to the point that it would not unlock the doors. I purchased 2 keys online. I did have to go to my closest dealer (2hr. drive)to get them cut and programed. The service dept. would not use the keys I had because they had damage to their machine from doing keys not provided by them(harder metals they said). I had to purchase an OEM key. Quite expensive. I should have checked first.

I guess that depends on where you go.

Most locksmiths don't have the special adapter for cutting Tibbe keys, and even dealers don't like to deal with them.

There are a few places to get keys done at a more reasonable rate. I'm one of those.
