Local find..

A block away I found a 2002 X-type with 133,000 miles, and a lifetime engine warranty. and I have a few questions I haven't found browsing the forums. First of all, Im looking for a car to replace my dowdy, yet comfortable and sensible 1999 Volvo XC70 - Its not fun to drive.

Its listed at $6,990 but I think its only worth $4-4.5 is that reasonable?

The first and major issue is there is a whirr coming from the drive train, possibly the transmission, only under acceleration. I didn't even notice this, but my dad picked up on it.

Second, the moon roof seems to only operate with the forward button, the back button does nothing although just by pushing forward it performs full operation. There also seems to be alot of wind noise coming from the sunroof, even with the shade closed. It does not sit flush to the roof, it is dented down in the rear a bit.

Finally, The speakers are terrible, they sound like the speakers that come cheap boats. What are options for upgrades in that size? Or is it the head unit that's the problem aswell. I'm seeking clarity, not impressive range.

I'll eventually buy a jag someday, even if this one doesn't work out!

From the balck grill, it looks like a sport model. The downside is no Nav, and no 3.0 engine. Lots of luck with howevere you go

SNowdude, the whirring sound, does it get worse with turning the wheel under acceleration? Is there a clicking sound when backing up/turning? These are all signs of bad half shafts in the front end and are fairly easy to replace yourself. This will help you talk the price down. But, if the noise is coming from the front and it doesn't appear to be half shafts, then I would tell you to stay away from that car as it then would most likely be a transfer case ($3000 repair).

Overall, $7000 for the car is a little on the high side, but that is what most dealerships/car lots are asking for them though too. So, you have some room to talk them down with. Probably should be able to get out the door for about $6000 (especially if they don't fix the whirring sound). May even offer to pay the $7000 if they fix the whirring sound first.

I would expect prices may be a bit higher in your neck of the woods as there aren't as many X-Types around as other States? But, for 7 large you can probably do better (lower mileage, sunroof that functions, 3.0, etc) looking at something not in your neighborhood if you want an X-Type.
