location of shifter cable adjustment bolt?
the shifter, though engaging drive in the j gate, is not engaging the transmission. i believe the shifter cable needs adjusting. After removing the cover this is what i see. the jaguar instructions are not very clear. it says to remove the cover then loosten the adjustment bolt. is this the adjustment bolt? this is the jaguar pic of the adjustment bolt, which does not look like the one in my pic https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...3f1947948.jpeg |
that pic looks more like this piece....which i cannot figure out how to adjust and if this is the adjuster, then there is no need to "remove the cover" as this is accessable without removing the cover https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...37d71435aa.png |

Looking at your #2 post, it looks like the black "boot" in pic 1 has the red arrow bolt hole. Looks to me like the adjustment would be to the right of pic #1 maybe behind that silver L Shaped bracket pointing down?

Nope, here is the workshop manual (starts on page 1566) last 3 steps =

thanks Dell the small bolt i pointed too is the adjustment bolt. when loosened, the cable can slide in and out. it DOES require a 2nd person to hold, then move the shifter while tightening the bolt. i have someone coming to loan their hands today there is a tool which "holds" the shifter but i cant find it online. one interesting note...while trying to do it alone i got the "cruise not available" message even though the engine was not running, when i re-adjusted the cable that message went away, so im thinkinig "cruise not available" could also be caused by a mis-aligned shifter |
wow these cables aint cheap! $100+ used $180+ new the bracket in my pic does not come with the new cable so i imagime the red/blue plastic piece is what holds the cable to the bracket. there is the same plastic piece on the other end of the cable https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...b1407efc0.jpeg |
So in your pic #1 it doesn't show right of the L shaped metal bracket. Does/do the red and blue plastic pieces fit against or under the L shaped bracket? Are they missing on yours, perhaps old, brittle and fallen off causing the misalignment? Just curiosity on my part.

the red/blue thing is shown in the 2nd photo, you can see the 2 mounting bolds have been removed. that is viewable without removing the cover. pic 1 is what you see when you remove the cover, the cover has 3 bolts and thats where you make the adjustment after removing the cover. i have no idea how it comes "out" of adjustment in the first place!. today it got fixed...the extra hands arrived and id like to say thats what made the difference, but alsa we failed, so i went back under to move the cable to back to where it last worked the best, and voila, i hit the sweet spot. got back in the car to see if it was anywhere close to correct, and all gears functioned as they should. its a cunning piece of equipment which show different errors each time you incorrectly set it. the instructions sound easy enough, but thats not the real world scenario |
