Lotus fan wanting an X-type - Advice?
Hi all,
Yup a forum newbie here, I spend most of my time on the Lotus forums but it's time to purchase a family wagon (looking for an X-Type 2004 or 05 estate sport). An elise or an exige is not an option just now sadly.
So, I find myself here wondering if anyone can kindly give me advice on some of the problems associated with an X-Type Estate I'm hoping to find or purchase very soon. What are the ups & downs to ownership?
I managed to test drive a couple of examples at Jag dealers (V6, 2.2 D & 2.0 D)... so got a feel for them and like alot. Most examples I've seen are or can afford are 60K miles and higher. I've even been looking at ones with 120K miles, is this a no go area from a reliability side?
Is there a place I can download the service schedules from?
Any advice would be appriciated as I quite like the idea of entering the world of Jags
Cheers
James

Greetings and welcome,
Do a quick search on the X type board and you will find a ton of good info on this very topic.
As always, a used car is going to have a lot of variables from prior ownership. My advice to you would be to get the newest and lowest mile example that you can afford.
Good luck on your search, I think you'll enjoy the X type.
P.S. - if you have more than 1 Lotus, do you have Loti?

Jam, prior maintenance is going to have a lot ot do with how good of a car you will get. Also, if the car has been involved in any accidents can play a factor too. As for long term reliability, you are going with the diesel and that motor will last you to well over 300K miles. So, enigne wise, you are good. The weak link with these cars is the transfer case. But, as long as you stick with the 04+ years, you will more than likely not have any issues. The real question is how hard you are day after day with the accelerator pedal. The more times you do the hard accelerations, the more likely you are to have transfer case issues. The rest of the car will hold up nicely and not give you any more problems than any other vehicle out there.
If you can afford an X-type, buy one. You won't be sorry.

Jam, no personal experiences thankfully. But, most of the guys that have had to get a new transfer case installed I seem to recall end up spending around $3000 USD. So, it isn't cheap. If you do the work yourself, then you are still spending around $1500 or so for a new transfer case (breaks the outer case normally and is beyond repair). The big trick with doing it yourself is that the right side of the transfer case has a special clip that if you don't install it correctly will rip an inner boot and you won't find that until you have been driving the car and you end up with a leak for the right front half shaft.
