What to expect from an X-Type on the highway? Well, as you are in the US your car will be either a 2.5 litre or a 3.0 litre (full details about the car will always elicit more accurate responses) - and both have plenty of power for overtaking, not to mention smooth cruising. You can expect superb roadholding and handling thanks to the firm suspension and the AWD configuration (excellent in all weather conditions). The fuel economy is not spectacular primarily because of the AWD, and the manual shift version is better in that regard than the automatic (again, vehicle details help). The cars are acceptably quiet with regard to road noise, equivalent to their competitors from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. The engines are quiet, the manual being quieter and with a better note than the automatic.
Unsolicited advice: it is advisable to have the transfer case fluid (75w140 synthetic) changed and the automatic transmission fluid changed if the car has 50,000 miles or more on it (in fact, regardless of the mileage it is a good idea) - again details, please.
And if the cooling air duct for the transfer case is not in place, you should get one - it fits with one bolt. If you have one you will see it easily under the engine if you look from the front. It is just slightly off centre - if you don't see it, it isn't there, but it is a necessary item.
