Need Help- Is this a Good Deal 2003 X-Type

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum

I found a 2003 X-type with 2,800 miles that I am looking at on Saturday for my wife. The car is owned by an elderly woman that can no longer drive and is asking $10k firm.

The car is in mint shape and in my eyes I am buying a brand new car.

My question to all is this a great deal for the car and what do I have to look out for with X-type (repairs etc)

thanks everyone

Wow, 2800 miles? That is a new car and the price... where is it? :)

You shouldn't have problems for that mileage ..really.

The car is like a dream to drive. There are certain things that you should look if it is used but not in this one.
However, keep in mind, is no perfect car outhere.

I am buying the car in NJ and never owned an Xtype and am excited but nervous on what are common problems with the X-type? I am well prepared to $$$ I have a 1997 E320 that I am selling to get this car--anyone

Just do a search on this site - the search button is in the black menu bar at the top of this page. You'll find lots of threads discussing common problems.

The issues are more pronounced in the 2002 to early 2004 models, as Jaguar worked through all of the teething pains of the new model. From mid-2004 on, the quality seems to have improved.

One thing to look into is whether all of the common issues from the 2003 models and factory recalls have been done. Given the low mileage, the former may not have been taken care of while the warranty was in effect. Fixes for the latter would likely still be honored by Jaguar.

Good luck, and keep us posted! If you end up buying the car, stop by often. This is the best Jaguar forum out there.

I bought mine used and I wrote a letter to Jaguar UK. They sent me an email where they mentioned all the recalls that were done to my car. Everything was done. You can try that too.

they do have problems too: the negative post of the battery cracks once in a while and usually that means a replacement of the battery and usually the negative cable also, the PVC hose needs to be replaced once in a while and the vacuum pipe too.
I can say more but it wouldn't be fair, mine has 140k and I changed a lot of things lately.
However at that milleage and that price I will probably buy it. I do not know the market in the US but you can compare what kind of car you can buy at that price (luxury, AWD).
Please take this just as a personal opinion.

Please let me know if you do know buy it! lol I will! Seriously though, if you pass on the deal please let me know if she will sell it to anybody else because I will fly up and buy it from her.

it almost sounds too good to be true. Have you seen the car yet?

pu5hkar 03-05-2009 01:59 AM

its a great deal. dont listen to anyone else. buy it. youll love it.

mecke, what exactly do you man by "found"? Is this someone you know or a vendor you don't? If not, it's worth getting it checked out. Also, were the 2800 miles all put on 6 years ago and it's been sitting since? Just look for dried rubber (tires, seals, hoses, etc). Otherwise, DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! You only go around once.

It is good you will see it in person - beware of scammers.

There are plenty of common problems, as was mentioned do a search or check out the FAQ section. Get the VIN and call the local Jaguar Dealer and ask if they can check vehicle history for repairs.

If it all checks out and the car is mint, you got yourself a whale of a deal my friend.

aladamson 03-09-2009 05:34 AM

It's a steal at that price. There are plenty of issues with the X-Type, but show me a car that is five years old that hasn't. The fact that this one has only a few miles on the clock means that you've cancelled out one of the major issues with auto parts; wear through use. Now, as Mohrd says check for any issues that may have occurred from disuse. Also I'd get an oil change pronto and a service done fairly soon.

To my mind if you buy a used car, you've got to be sensible enough to set a side a few $ when things go wrong. Other than that good luck.

WOW 2,800 miles for a 2003 X-type? check the car and DO IT!

pu5hkar 03-09-2009 04:18 PM

enough of this do it stuff. i need him to tell me if he did or not

Pete04xtype 03-09-2009 07:50 PM

I would have that car checked at a local Jaguar dealer or certified technician.. Have them go through it top to bottom and list anything that it needs or may need down the road.

Sounds like a good deal and if it all checks out, go for it.

Alfadude 03-11-2009 05:42 PM

I agree with Pete. Unless you personally know the history have it checked out by a mechanic you trust no matter how good it looks. Also, maybe spend the moeny for a Carfax. That is not a be all and end all, but at least it is a cheap data point. All that stuff is just cheap insurance. Sounds like it IS virtually new, but it IS a used car, so there is always an element of risk. If it all checks out you'll love it, or should I say your wife will love it....and maybe you can reap other rewards for finding it for her. :>)

aquill1 03-13-2009 01:29 PM

Sounds too good to be true but things must not be good up there for the car to not have any miles and be that low in price. I'd get it checked out and don't let anyone steal it from you, we all know your stealing from that poor old lady!

Alfadude 03-14-2009 09:12 PM

Well????? Mecke, there are a number of us that want closure on this? Did you pull the trigger or not? Either way there must be a good story.
