Need to tighten the steering wheel.
I need to tighten the steering wheel on my 2004 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 AWD. I have removed 3 screws from the bottom cover, taken the cover off. Removed the top and bottom covers, now I can see the entire steering column wiring system. Next I removed 4 screws, 2 at the bottom a 2 at the top from behind the steering wheel. This loosens the plastic cover behind the steering wheel but I can't remove it completely. I'm unable to remove the airbag portion.

You need to remove the Airbag to get to the Steering Wheel retaining nut:
Read the warnings about disconnecting the battery and giving the backup capacitor time to discharge before attempting to disconnect and remove the Airbag:

Graham,
so far I have removed the top and bottom covers by taking 3 screws from the bottom steering shaft. after removing the covers I can see all of the wiring in the steering shaft. there are 4 screws behind the steering wheels I have removed these and tried pulling on the airbag but the airbag didn't loosen / wouldn't come off. there are no screws on the side of the steering wheels or the bottom.

I've already moved one thread you have posted here with this question:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-wheel-138458/
In my reply there, I attached instructions on removing the airbag and the steering wheel.
Here's a link to a video showing the procedure:
If you are still not absolutely clear on the procedure after viewing the video then I recommend you take the vehicle to a dealer or independent. AIRBAGS ARE DANGEROUS if not handled correctly.

GGG, thanks for the vid but I must have a steering wheel like no one else. I looked at this vid yesterday but I don't have the 2 side screws as this guy shows removing. I have almost physically ripped my steering wheel off due to frustration. Looking to take it to an import car center today and have it worked on. Thanks for taking the time to help.

GGG,
In taking a 2nd look at the steering wheel in the video mine is a different 4 spoke. Like my stereo volume controller in a small wheel not the + / - button. I hope that better explains what type of steering wheel I have on my 04 Xtype awd. It has to be something very simple like a hidden screw or a clip / clamp that I'm overlooking.

It sounds like you have the wood and leather wheel.
At 3, 6, and 0 o'clock on the back off the wheel, you will find small rectangular openings. Inside of those openings, there are thick J-shaped clips that secure a wire retainer that wraps around the air bag.
You can use a thin but long flathead screwdriver to push the wire out from under the clip. Push the airbag towards yourself as you finagle the clips, once you get the first loose,
the others will be much easier.

wa3ra, I owe you cold beers and a steak dinner. you were spot on with my steering wheel. I did have trouble figuring out how to pry the clip with sticking a flathead screwdriver through the 3 squares. I was able to pry back the plastic cover and come from the top and side with needle nose plyers and a flathead screwdriver and work the clip loose. Thank you so much for the info. I was just getting so frustrated b/c I knew it was something simple that I was missing. The retaining nut was about 80% backed out. Another week or so and the steering wheel would have come completely off, probably while I was driving.
